Title: Backing up a Terastation Pro II
Post by: gmradiator on October 21, 2009, 02:23:22 AM

Hello,

This is really both a question and a feature request.

I'm looking for anyone who has found a workable solution to backing up a Tersatation Pro II as part of a DR (disaster recovery) solution.

We currently use a 1TB TS pro II NAS to host all users 'My Documents' folders on our domain network.

We back up the terastation externally to two USB drives twice per week.

These drives are rotated and taken off site - as per DR requirements.

The TS's backup facility is used to schedule the backups, twice weekly, out of business hours (overnight).

When day1 backup is finished, usb drive1 is disconnected, removed and stored off-site.

usb drive 2 is then put in place ready for day2 backup. process is repeated indefinately.

Problem is, there is no way to safely eject the USB backup drives. removing the drive assignment from within the TS does not safely unmount the drives.

And as such, we are encountering write errors during backups, and when disconnecting.

Further, when disconnecting the USB drives, the TS re-mounts the entire RAID filesystem, causing diconnection errors on all workstations currently accessing files on the network. So even if this is done out of hours, the users are still presented with an error on screen the next time they go to their pc.

I'm sure there must be other businesses using the TS pro2, and as such must be backing up and taking drives off-site.

How are other users overcoming these problems ?

I've brought this to the attention of buffalo tech support by email, although they say it is 'expected functionality' and isn't a problem. they 'may' look into it as a feature request, but may not.

Thanks for any help on this one.

David

Since noone has replied; the only way that I know of to unmount a drive before removing it is by shutting down the TS.  I will send up a feature request for you.

Thanks..

but I am still absolutely speechless that nobody backs up their terastation!

(properly, i.e. taking the backup drives offsite).

I urge anyone using any buffalo NAS to back it up, especially if using it in a business environment.

people are so lax with backups - it always amazes me.

I agree, and you can take them off site.  It should unmount the drive when you shut it off, there just isn't a button or config option to do it.
