My current set up;
Buffalo Terastation Duo TS-WXL/R1 2Tb Firmware ver. 1.04
Buffalo Just Store HD-E1.0TU2
APC SC420 Smart-UPS
The Terastation is connected to the APC UPS with the serial cable that was supplied with the APC UPS.
The problem I have is that the Terastation will not shut down automatically when the power to the APC UPS fails.
The relevant settings are;
Synchronization with UPS: Enabled
Shutdown condition when power failure: Shutdown Terastation after 1 minute(s)
UPS behavior after Terastation shutdown: Alive
UPS recovery function: Disabled
When the power to the APC UPS fails it switches to backup battery and keeps powering the Terastation. I was expecting the Terastation to perform an orderly shutdown after 1 minute, but this does not happen. Even after 10 or 15 minutes the Terastation still does not shutdown.
Has anyone got this type of configuration to work successfully and if so what I am doing wrong?
Also I have another problem with the Terastation. I have the Buffalo Just Store external USB drive connected to allow scheduled weekly backups. I also have the Terastation set to go into "sleep mode" between 23:00 and 07:00. The problem is that when the Terastation wakes from "sleep mode" it no longer recognizes the attached USB drive and the scheduled backup fails. The only way I can get the Terastation to recognize the USB drive after "sleep mode" is to unplug the USB drive and then reconnect it and then it is recognized until the Terastation next enters "sleep mode". This is inconvienient and is there a way to allow the Terastation to automatically recognize the USB drive after waking from "sleep mode"?
I will appreciate any assistance with these issues.

Have you tried resetting the unit to defaults? Also try updating the firmware.

I've updated the firmware to ver. 1.06 and both of the problems are now resolved.
The TS now shuts down when instructed to do so from the UPS and the USB drive is recognized straight away from power up and from waking from sleep mode.
