Post by: pengu on October 01, 2009, 01:10:50 PM

TeraStation Pro II

Model TS-H0.0TGL/R5

Seagate 250g (4)

Before I got error E04 - was trying to do backup.  I set static IP of NAS to 192.168.1.210.  I attached USB Seagate 1.5TB.  Formatted ext3.  Setup and ran a immediate backup.  It failed.  I disconnected USB drive.  Restarted using web interface.  Upon restart got

system error E04 with red lights flashing and alarm going

Tech Support: he told me to do a EM boot and do fireware upgrade

Me: what if it does not work can i go back to old fireware

Tech Support: disconnect disk 1 and try again if not try disk 2 etc...

i forced shutdown holding power button.  I held the init button below LCD display pushed power button.  It made chime.  I got a new error.

EM mode booting.......

i called tech support 17min no answer hung up.  I tried to reboot again, again, again, again, and now system E04 but get a new error

system booting.........

well tried reboot again, again, again and again.  One time it was up.  I tried to access it.  I looked at the IP it was 192.168.1.210 but the router and my pc said 172.X.X.X.  I relized it was on static IP.  I then changed router to 192.X.X.X and still could not access NAS.  Well it was 11:30pm so I called tech support

Tech Support: you need to do TFTP the steps are on forums.buffalotech.com

Me: thanks I will give it a try

well i followed the step for TFTP  but ran into a problem.  Where is the FTFP boot.exe program.  I search forum and web finally found it after 2hrs of google and forums.buffalotech.com searching.  For you others that need it here it is the TFTP boot.exe updater program (ftp://24.153.165.234/disk1/share/nas-recovery/).  Now I follow the steps and lauched TFTP boot.exe

it just sat there accepting request.......... its say if did not work try steps again.  I reboot again, again, again, and again.  I though oh I set it to static IP so the default 192.168.11.1 will not work.  I set my static IP to 192.168.1.1 because the NAS was last on static 192.168.1.210.  I lauched TFTP boot.exe again.  Rebooted again, again, again, and again.  same thing.

accepting requests...

I was tired at 2:30am.  I left the NAS on (LCD display - EM mode booting...)  This morning I tried TFTP boot.exe again, again, again and again.   Finally I got this new error

Disk

Disk 1 checking

Speed Line

no link

I deceided to call tech support again.  9:45am got a message their in train call back in 2 hrs.  I then decieded to do this form posting to the community in hopes someone can help.

As the first tech said, I would try removing each drive indivually as it sounds like a bad HDD.

Just shut down the unit and remove drive one.  Then turn on the TS (normally, dont hold down the init).  If the unit boots up (you will still get errors, but the unit will actually boot up w/o an E04 error) you need to replace that HDD.  If it doesnt boot up, shut down the unit, replace drive 1 and remove drive 2.  Continue the process until you find the bad HDD

TY you replied before I could edit my posting.

i removed each drive one by one.  I still got the booting.....

i did get an system error E04 with drive 4 removed though

i am thinking that my RJ 45 female connector is bad

i know this was purchased with-in the 3 years but can not find the receipt.  I believe it was over 2 years ago that I did purchase it.  Guess I have a big brick now.

Any thoughts of putting these 4 drives in another NAS/SAN device to get back my data since I am a photographer and need my photos back.....

Its not supported but if you know for a fact that the drives are good you can get a new unit (TSPro 2) and put the drives in.  Then you should just need to flash the firmware.
