Title: Terastation Live - external USB drive keeps replicating on NAS server causing out of space
Post by: franker2002 on September 30, 2009, 06:13:15 PM

Terastation Live HS-H1.0TGL/R5 with 1.0TB Drivestation TurboUSB external drive.

After using my Terastation Live for one month I was shocked to find that I was out of space. Very unusual since I had only placed approximately 25GB of data on the NAS server. My investigation revealed a second shared folder named usbdisk1 which contains the contents of the external usb drive. This would not normally concern me since all it should contain is the 25GB of data that I was backing up to the external usb drive, however, it appears that this folder is continually replicating within itself. Eventually it fills the 700GB available on the RAID 5 configured Terastation Live!!! I tried a quick & dirty fix by attempting to delete the contents of usbdisk1 on the server. No joy! There are now so many iterations of usbdisk1 within usbdisk1, etc. that I cannot delete this folder or it's contents. I was able to disable the USB drive and run Disk Check on the server. This seemed to reclaim most of the lost disk space but as soon as I re-enabled the external usb drive, it went back to replicating itself all over again.

Is there a solution to this problem? I am using the built-in backup program to back up a separate user created share folder called OFFICE. That folder does not contain anything named usbdisk1. I must be missing something.....

PLEASE HELP.

What kind of backup did you select?

Differential and I am only backing up a folder called OFFICE on the TS-Live server.

OK, I think I've figured it out. It has nothing to do with the backup, rather it seems to be the way the Terastation Live handles shares. I formatted the external USB drive using the provided formatting software and set it to serve as a backup device. The default is to turn on Windows sharing of the external drive. This would be fine but somehow the TS-Live share seems to copy the shared external drive to the onboard (Raid 5) drives, thus using up some hard drive space. The bug is that the share folder wants to make an iterative copy of itself until the drive is full. I repeat I do not have all shares set to backup only one shared folder called OFFICE. Other shares are INFO, DATA, and USBDISK1 (the external USB drive). The only fix I could come up with was to disable all sharing options for the external USB drive. So far so good.

NOTE - If any one can rationalize this strange behavior for me, I would love to hear your tale. I have worked with a number of networks and network devices but never have I seen such erratic behavior where an external drive or shared folder would copy itself into itself over and over until there was no space left.
