Title: Terastation Live 2.0tb RAID 5 Array Parameters (Stripe order, size, row count?)
Post by: sethwiseman on November 07, 2008, 12:25:20 PM

Hello,

I am trying to perform a data recovery on hard drives from a crashed Terastation Live 2.0tb NAS with some reliable over the counter recovery software.  The drives are perfectly entact, but the terastation won't read them. I am using special software to create a virtual raid with the 4 hard drives.  I have the 4 hard drives connected by a USB drive enclosure.  All of the drives show as working.  The virtual raid set appears to be working, but it is asking for the RAID parameters.  The raid parameters have to match in order for the data and partitions to be readable. Is it possible to supply me with the stripe size? stripe order? row count? and any and all specifications for re-building the RAID 5 array virtually? This information will help me save thousands of dollars on costly data recovery companies.  Please help!

On each hard drive is 4 partitions, one each for the OS, swap (like apagefile but in linux), data, and a padding partition to allow forvariations in drive size. The unit uses software RAID in XFS withlefthand striping and default cluster size of 64 on the data partitionsonly. The program used to run the RAID is mdadm.

The block size for that data partition (I believe this is the stripe size that you're looking for) is 4096 bytes. The parity rotation is left-symmetric.

The program we normally recommend for raid data recovery is UFS Explorer (http://www.ufsexplorer.com/). The trial version will allow you to virtually mount the array and see the data, but you will need to purchase a license (50 USD i believe) in order to copy files off that are larger than 64 KB.

"The trial version will allow you to virtually mount the array and see the data"

Ok, I'm an IT novice, but I have the same problem as the OP.

I have about 1.4GB on the drives, but the lights show them to be intact. There was a power failure here, and I think that caused the problem.

What does the above quote mean, please, to "virtually mount the array"? Is this something I can do at home?

Is there some way, if I attach a bunch of external drives to the Terastation, that I'll be able to copy my files off the drives using that software?

I'm freaking out a bit, as I never expected to have a problem with these machines (I have a few of them). I thought by having 4 drives on RAID5 I was protecting myself against drive failure. But then I know nothing about any of this. Is this something I can recover without paying someone hundreds of pounds to do?

Any advice, please?

Thanks, Yvonne.
