Title: LS-CHL1TB flashing blue light now lost password
Post by: baz8755 on September 10, 2009, 12:46:41 PM

When I tried to access my LS-CHL1TB this evening I found that it had a continuous flashing blue light. I tried switching the power switch to off but it did nothing. Eventually I pulled the power and re-powered the unit.

It has come up correctly and all my user and FTP shares appear to be working, however I can no longer log into the administration web page.

Help

Cheers

Baz

I just tried the force firmware update, unfortunatley the updater does not find my NAS as I have the allow detection switched off on the box. And off course I cannot get into the admin menu to change it

Same thing happened to me this past weekend and it seems to happen periodically to manyothers.  Here is what happened to me and how it was resolved:

I was using several desktops and transferring many files using Q-Dir, a program that allows you to open several windows and view files and folders and easily cut, copy and paste files between devices - (it can be found at www.CNET.com in the Windows downloads or at their website www.softwareok.com  ) between my  LS-CH1.0TL device (firmware 1.07) which is a 1 GB Buffalo NAS and my LS-W2.0TGL/R1-V3 device.  The problem happened the next morning when I discovered that after taking the regular shutdown overnight nap my LS-CH1.0TL device was not online.  It was rapidly flashing both lights.  I checked the manual and they list issues for 2-7 flashes but mine was just flashing rapidly and not doing a typical set of countable flashes.  So I turned the switch to off expecting it to shut down.  It didn't and after about 45 minutes I just pulled the power cord and it turned off.  When I turned it back on it went back to continuous flashing.   I revived from hibernation one of the desktops I had been using the night before and discovered that Q-Dir was still on the screen.  I checked the LS-CH1.0TL device and noticed that it had returned to a solid blue light.  I think that was because the desktop with the Q-Dir program came back and it was able to sort of pick up where it had left off.  I decided I'd run disk check and went to log into the  LS-CH1.0TL device.  Password/user name error.  Strange.  That happened repeatedly.  The LS-CH1.0TL device was online and I could access the files on it without any problem.  the NASNavigator2 program showed it but it seemed to have forgotten my password.  Wrong!  Playing with the NASNavigator2 software I found the right-click properties area and the IP Settings tab.  Whet the heck let's see if that does anything so I attempted to renew the IP address.  Well at that point it wanted my Admin password which I typed in, and it took it, renewing the IP address.  So I learned from that that I ken the correct password and how can it forget the Admin user name.  After reading through many pages of these posts I noticed that almost all the problems reported were with people that had enabled the shutdown feature.  Some reported that after a normal shutdown the problem was resolved.  Despite my normal impatience I resisted the urge to try the EM mode, etc. and just left it on and alone, waited for it to sleep and wakeup.  It did and the problem was resolved.  This morning it let me log in and everything is just fine.

My conclusions from this are that while this is a scary issue it isn't really a big deal.  If you are having the problem I recommend trying the NASNavigator2 IP renew to have it ask for and receive your password.  If that works and you have your machine set up to shut down and wake again to save energy, let that happen and see if things are OK after that process completes.

For Buffalo Tech, I suggest trying to configure a  LS-CH1.0TL device for an automatic shutdown and awake.  Then try transferring some files to and fro on a Win XP SP3 fully updated using Q-Dir or Windows Explorer and then before the  LS-CH1.0TL device goes offline, hibernate the desktop with Q-Dir or the Windows Explorer open and referencing files on the NAS - not having any files open just have them show in the directory as the desktop hibernates.  Keep the desktop hibernated while the  LS-CH1.0TL device goes into its sleep time and awakes.  I strongly suspect you will see a flashing blue light.

Bottom line is that my problem is over and everything is now fine.  I didn't lose anything.

I hope this helps.

After the last problem my NAS box did indeed recover after its midnght nap. I has just occured again, I had to pull the power lead and now it will not let me log in again. I have tried power cycling with the switch but it is still not allowing login. I hope the midnight nap will resolve but I am getting very annoyed as this is now the second time it has happened.

Sounds like you need to update the firmware.  I know you said you "have the allow detection switched off on the box" but it should still show up with the NAVI/Updater.  Make sure you have all of your firewalls disabled and the NASNAVI isnt running when executing the updater.exe file.

I currently have 1.07 installed and as far as I am aware this is the latest available

So try the force firmware update with the options checked to "delete user configuration", "force update" and "do not check version".  If it does ask for a username and password try the default admin/password.

Will try tonight if has not recovered itself.

What is the default password?

Also I would like to know why it has started doing this as the unit is still under warranty and as far as I am concerned it should not be doing this.

The default is admin/password

Why the problem has occured is hard to say.  We have seen this issue on the boards frequently.  The problem is that we have not had this problem with units that are in the US, just over seas.  This has left us relatively limited in our testing abilities for this issue.

I noticed your IP says you're in the UK.  Did you purchase your unit in the US?  If so we can set you up with an RMA and do some testing for you.  If not, you will have to raise your concerns with your local support.

Bought in UK

Again the unit found the passwords after it's automatic overnight power off/on.

I have now enabled the Navigator detection to hopefully give me more options the next time this occurs, which I am sure it will :(
