Title: Linkstation Live HS-DH250GL hard drive failing?
Post by: bobf on September 09, 2009, 12:35:33 PM

This device has lived on my home network for two years. Plugged into a UPS and rarely turned off. Running 2.11 firmware. It backs up to a Drivestation weekly.

All went well until last month. Weekly backup failed. I can access the drive but access to files slows to a crawl within minutes. I have run "disk check" successfully. Files are there but I can only access then for minutes before access comes to a halt.

Does this sound like a hard drive failure?

It would seem replacing the hard drive is not an option?

Thanks for your help....

Hmm, hard to say with the given information.  Are you getting error/info lights?  How full is the unit to its capacity?

No error lights, the unit can be shut down and restarted normally. It is about 60% full.

Only sign of trouble was the backup failure to an attatched Drivestation, and the slowdown when accessing files.

I don't remember the exact backup failure message.

I am not concerned about data loss, I have a good backup. I am trying to decide if I need to replace or not.

I have not tried resetting the unit to defaults and starting over....

Thats good to hear, out of curiosity how large was the transfer?  What format was the external HDD?  Did you format it with the linkstation?  Are you hearing any noise from the unit that wasn't there previously?

Resetting to default is always an option, but I would still like a little bit more information.

Transfer was around 100MB

Format for Linkstation and Drivestation are "out of box", XFS for Linkstation and FAT for Drivestation.

No reformating was done.

The backup on the USB Drivestation is now running as a second external USB hard drive on another Linkstation. The Linkstation recognized all the files and I sucessfully copied them up to this second Linkstation.

As for noise on the origional unit, I notice occasional clicking or drive activity when idle, maybe every 5-10 seconds after it's been running for a while.

I hate to say it bobf, but it is hard to tell.  You're not getting any direct indication that there is any harddrive failure but you describe a few symptoms that COULD be HDD failure.  I wish I had a more definitive answer for you but I don't.
