is there a way to put a global password on a whole Linkstation, so that you see it but it aks a password, rather than for each folder?

Nope, access restrictions can only be set on an given shared folder, not on a global basis. Would be a nice feature though.
That would be a good suggestions for the Linkstation feature request thread...
