Title: Remote Backup issues
Post by: DavidRemote on August 31, 2009, 01:47:04 PM

Products:

Linkstation LS-WTGL/R1-V3

Firmware 3.09

(Backup Source)

Linkstation HS-DHGL2BB

Firmware 2.11

(Backup Destination)

One drive is located at my office, the other at my home.

So all I want to do is have the Source drive backup to the Destination drive. I added both drives to eachother by going to Disk Backup>Add Linkstation. I created shared folders on both drives, each with "Disk Backup" checked.

I at first only added the ports recommended in the manual (22939,873,8873), but later while troubleshooting ended up putting both NAS devices on a DMZ.

Both drives "see" eachother in the "Linkstation List"  (though of note, they display the DHCP-assigned IP the router gives the NAS, NOT the public IP that I had manually entered in "Add Linkstation"), but do not see eachother's shared Shared Folders When going to Disk Backup>Job1>Destination Backup Shared Folder.

As stated before, I've tried just about everything. I tried DMZ, disabled all hardware/software firewalls, refreshing, restarting both routers/NASs. No matter what I do they "see" eachother in the "Linkstation List", but NOT on the "Destination Backup" dropdown. I tried adding a password to the share to try and "Force" it to see the folder, which did nothing.

Please help!

EDIT 1: I have a suspicion that what's happening is that after I enter the (Public) IP address of my router in the "Add Linkstation" field, the Source NAS gets forwarded to the (private) IP address the DHCP has assigned to the Destination NAS, and memorizes the Private IP isntead of the Public IP. That makes sense due to the fact that the destination NAS obviously only knows it's private IP, but doesn't make sense from a practical standpoint. It would explain why that's the IP it shows on the "Linkstation list". This is really annoying, because if the Source NAS would just retain the IP address that I entered, it would always get forwarded to the proper place, but since it takes a private address, it attempts to access a DHCP-assigned IP that obviously doesn't exist on the Source's network.

If I'm right, a simple firmware update that tells it to keep the IP address I enter INSTEAD of what is reported by the other NAS would allow all Linkstation users like myself a very nice remote backup solution.

EDIT 2: Just clarification edits

EDIT 3: I talked to two (very helpful!) Buffalo reps. It's what I thought; the Linkstation units memorize the LAN IP, not the public IP. I was told that the higher-end TerraStations have overcome this problem...which unfortunately doesn't help me, seeing as I already bought this Linkstation...

I was reading your posts and your edits.  Sounds like Buffalo has confirmed  your assessment of the problem, but did they ever offer a solution?

I've been reading many posts now and it seems many people  (including me) are having problems with the remote backup advertized by Buffalo.  I can't find any clear instructions on the site as to how it's supposed to work, let alone what to do if it doesn't do what it's supposed to.
