Title: PS3 don't understand DVD's from Linkstatio's folder
Post by: monza on August 30, 2009, 04:27:16 PM

Hi,

When I bought my Linkstation Live (LS-CHL, 1 TB with Torrent), I had a great idea to copy all my DVD's to Linkstation so that I don't need the physical DVD's anymore.

Now the problem is, that my PS3 sees the DVD movies as files, not as movies. It won't play menus, and the movie is shown as files, e.g. VIDEO_TS/VTS_01_0, VTS_01_0 and so on. Just like I was looking at folders in my computer.

So is there any solution for that, will I be able to watch movies from Linkstation as I was using real DVD's?

Can you please give us more info on your Linkstation.  Firmware, etc......

The format you specified is how windows reads the file for DVD, you will need to use software to change the file type to something the PS3 can recognise (MPEG4 for example), software like convertDVDtoavi should work for you.

It is brand new Linkstation Live II 1 TB With Torrent, firmware latest 1.07 (and I have backed up all the data to another 1 TB USB drive, so no problem with that...).

I know I can change DVD to another format, for sure. But I wonder why PS3 behaves like that. If I copy a DVD to my PC's hard drive, I can watch the movie with any DVD player software. If I put DVD disk to my PS3, it plays normally, of course. But when I point PS3 to get the movie from NAS, it sees only files.

So the main question is, why PS3 do not understand the same material from network disk? PS3 plays other kind of movies (AVI's, MPEG4's and so on) from NAS normally.

Becuase when you copy the dvd to your hard drive its put into a format that the ps3 does not understand. Reading from a disk is competely different story. The ps3 can only recognize certain formats and a ripped dvd that is not converted is not one of them.

OK, bueno. How about some kind of media server software? It seems that Twonky Media Server has a NAS version of their media server software:

Any knowledge about it's functionality on Linkstation Live II?

Its not the media server that cant send the files, its the ps3 that cannot read that specific file.

I believe the CHL does have Twonky built in like the XHL does.  Type in: 192.168.20.108:9050  Now of course, replace my internal ip address with the address of your linkstation.  See what happens.

Do you mean to type this to PS3's web browser or to PC's browser?

Yes, it opens Buffalo's web access. I can open that from my PS3 too by writing the same addres. Do you mean I have to play my DVD's using web access?

When you type in your LS's ip address with :9050 it should bring you to the twonky settings page.  If not enable the media server through web access under extensions then media server.

I guess I should have been more specific in the begining.  You will not be able play your dvd's the way to want to because the PS3 does not recognize that as a proper format as many have pointed out. You asked about Twonkyserver, I was just pointing out that it won't change your situation as it is already built into your nas.  I was giving you directions to locate you LS's built in twonky server to see for yourself.

Sorry for being confusing.  I sometimes don't think before I type ;)

OK, I quess my question can be considered as answered.

But many thanks, and specially thanks for jeffa's last comment considering that Twonky settings page. I wasn't aware of that, and that is also what I have been looking for. That is not mentioned in manual, I believe...
