Title: Problem with TurboUSB DriveStation HD-HS500U2
Post by: ggatlanta on August 22, 2009, 08:25:38 AM

Hi all, first posting here. I have a variety of Buffalo products, and this is the first time I've had an issue with one.

My TurboUSB DriveStation HD-HS500U2 suddenly started acting up. First, the orange light on the front stays lit all the time. Initially, my system would give USB errors and the drive wouldn't even mount. Then I tried plugging into a variety of usb ports on different machines. After letting the drive sit overnight, I suddenly gained access to the drive this morning. The orange light is still continuously on though, and while I can see the files on the drive, I cannot access them.

Whenever I try to copy a file off of the drive, I get the following error message:

Cannot copy xxxx.xxx: Cannot find the specified file. Make sure you specify the correct path and file name.

I am running Windows XP.

the device is a 500GB Turbo USB DriveStation HD-HS500U2 (HD_HSU2 series)

I do not know how to access the firmware version.

Thanks for your help.

Graham

I would look into a warrenty replacement. It sounds like the usb controler is dying or the file system is currupting.

Thanks Jotin,

Is there any way I can remove the drive and get the data off of it? That's my biggest concern.

I have the exact same problem. Can i ask, is the orange light still on when you got access to your files?

Im thinking of doing the overnight method aswell.

By removing the hardisk from its case and putting it into an external disk reader, would this save the data on the disk? ANYONE know?

I removed the drive, hooked it up to another computer, only to find it was the drive that was bad, not the controller. It's easy to do, if you decide to. It's a SATA connector, though.

What do you mean by the controller? like the outer casing?

Yes, the hard drive is half the equation. You can literally take the HD out of the case and stick it into a system or a dock just like any other HD. The controller part is the proprietary part built by Buffalo.
