I've had my LS-C500L for about 2 months now. Just two days ago I went to grab a file from the drive only to notice my pc could not find it. Not only that, my router does not even see it. I powered down the NAS and started back up and the status light is blinking a red light 6 times. I attempted to go into EM mode but to no avail. I have no idea what version firmware I have (it has not been updated since I purchased it 2 months ago). Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated as my wife put all our tax info on that drive and did not back it up to DVD yet.
I also cannot perform a firmware update forced or not as the update application cannot find my NAS, so no option on that front that I know of.

The only other option is the TFTP:
http://forums.buffalotech.com/buffalo/board/message?board.id=0101&thread.id=9312
Unfortunately if that doesn't work then it's a bad HDD..
I used TFTP and it connected successfully. NAS Navigator popped up a message stating: "LS-CL-EMA6B has sent information notification
information:
l11: The bad sectors of disk 1 reaches emergency level (2007/11/01 00:11:36)
The EM mode was detected. Update firmware or contact your local thechnical support (2009/08/21 14:43:55)
I attempted a firmware update unsuccessfully then a forced update unsuccessfully. I received the following message on the updates: "Couldn't confirm a response from LS-CL-EMA6B. Please check a network address of both PC and LS-CL-EMA6B. Please disable the Firewall function if it is working on PC. Updating is aborted.
My firewall is disabled and The IP addresses are set to what they are supposed to be when using TFTP.
Also, the Firmware Version field on the updater is empty. I'm thinking maybe the HD is fine and the NAS unit itself crapped out.
Any other suggestions? I just want to get my data off there and toss this piece in the trash. Definitely not satisfied with a 2 month old broken NAS by any means.

Bad sectors is a critical error unfortunately. I would contact our support department for a replacement or contact data recovery.
You can also remove the HDDs and hook them up to a linux computer, or use a software program that specializes in RAID recovery like UFS Explorer.
We do apologize for the inconvenience.
Thanks. I will contact Buffalo and see if they will help me. I will also contact New Egg as that may be easier since they are really good with returns.
