Title: Linkstation & Vista problem
Post by: hoodg on August 16, 2009, 11:02:13 AM

I've installed the registry file for Vista but still cannot connect to my Linkstation HD-HLAN.

Here's the info:

Running NASNaviagator2 Ver 2.11 finds the beast with an IP of 192.168.11.150 and Subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and firmware version 2.05

However I can't use any of the options to browse or set a network drive - I get the error "Remote default share is missing".

Properties show "Obtain address via DHCP" but if I click "renew address" I get error "The drive of the target is not found".

I try pinging the IP but no reply.

I tried updating to 2.31 but nothing happened.

My local area network connection on PC shows IPv4 of 169.254.217.147 / 255.255.0.0

LS is attached directly to lan connection of PC.

What am I doing wrong?

The thing works fine attached to my Audiotron MP3 gadget.

TIA

Sounds like you're connecting the Linkstation directly to the computer's ethernet port. 192.168.11.150 is the default IP of the LS and when you get a 169.254.x.x address on your computer that means that your computer has no network connection. Make sure to plug both your LS and your computer to a router. The LS is a NAS (Network Attached Storage) device and must be connected to a network in order to obtain an IP address automatically. If this is not the case and you do have these items attached to a network or router let me know and I will see what we can do next to fix the issue.

Seems to be a problem with the DHCP server on your router (since the LS has gone back to is default IP and the PC is only getting a ghost IP) Try resetting the router.

I found this article that rang a bell for me. Vista has different ways of negotiating permissions over the network. Basically it doesn't use the old, less secure XP method, and the Linkstation doesn't support the new one. The steps in the above link (which didn't work for me, perhaps because I'm not logged in as administrator,) just change a registry setting. Buffalo actually has a "patch" under the utility section of their downloads page (choose the linkstation option in the droplist.) This is just a registry key file which changes a single key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\LmCompatibilityLevel Change the value from 3 to 2 and restart. Presto, explorer logs in with the current user and password, as expected. Assuming that this has previously been set up on the Linkstation.

Yes I was plugging it directly into the PC. I've moved it and plugged it into the wireless router. But what should happen now? How would I know the IP address it has been assign, and how do I tell it to use DHCP in the first place? Now even NasNavigator doesn't find it. My computer now does not show a lan connection other than the wireless one.

I reset the NAS but nothing changed. If it has it's default address, how do I now tell it to use DHCP if I can't connect to it ?

I checked the registry of the PC I originaly connected to and the key is there and set to 2 as mentioned above.

Sorry, I'm a bit behind on the network stuff...

Now that is it plugged into your router you can install the Nas Navi program from the CD that came with the unit. That will tell you what the unit's IP address is. Once you have that address you can enter it into a web browser and access the settings page. More importantly you can map the drive on your computer now. To do this, right click on "My Computer" (XP), or "Computer" (Vista) and select Map Network Drive. Select the drive letter in the dropdown menu, and in folder type in //nasipaddress/share and you will have the folder you can store all your data in mapped on your computer.

But as I said above, NasNav2 doesn't find it any more, even though it is plugged straight into my wireless router. Don't I somehow have to tell the LS to use DHCP? If so, how?

If the IP address on it currently is 192.168.11.150 then you're going to want to set a static IP on your computer to something like 192.168.11.100 and you will be able to log into the web gui and set the IP address to whatever you want it to be. This link has a video of how to set a static IP in vista. Keep in mind that when you are done configuring the LS, you must go back to an automatic IP on your computer. This is the link. http://www.trainsignaltraining.com/windows-vista-ip-addressing/2006-11-15/   Once you do this you can connect the nas directly to your comptuer's ethernet port and set it up that way.

Finally found time to play with this again. Changed the IP address of my desktop on the wireless network as suggested. Couldn't ping the LS.

Got a laptop and plugged it directly into my wireless router where the LS is plugged in. NasNav2 showed 192.168.0.15 (different from previously). I browsed to that address and the LS web gui showed it got this address via dhcp.

So from the laptop wired to the router I can see all the shares and files, but from my desktop over the wireless lan I can't even ping the LS (get "destination host unreachable").  Yet both my desktop and the LS get their IP config from the router's dhcp.

What now? Direct wiring my desktop to the router is a problem as it's a bit far.
