Title: FTP access
Post by: OBie on July 30, 2009, 08:23:32 PM

OK,

New at FTP, even though it's older than me...

I'm using FileZilla and seems like a great GUI for FTP.

I played at work, and it worked....

At home, I'm taking control of an EXTERNAL computer so I'm on the OUTSIDE,

    looking in from the Internet.

When I try to connect to my NAS, with FileZilla,

    I get;

Connecting to 68.224.xxx.xxx:9000...

Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message...

Of course the complete IP is there...

I reviewed all the FTP forums, Linksys router has every port,

    9000, 20 & 21 open.

I have all FTP check marks on the Linkstations (3.09) checked.

It looks like it's almost there, but NOT.

I do NOT have a SERVER at home, it that even needed?

My big push for FTP is the ability to transfer FOLDERS and not just files,

with the built in Web interface.

    Any Ideas?

Your router needs to be configured not only to open the FTP ports, but to also forward their traffic to the LinkStation.  That could be your issue.  Also, (this may seem obvioius), make sure your LinkStation is residing at the IP address on your network that you expect it to be.

Another thought; from the outside world you access your linkstation at your WAN IP address, not at its internal IP address.  For example, if your cable modem resides at 68.241.192.57 (just an example) on the WAN side, but your LinkStation is at 192.168.1.3 within your LAN, you need to be sure that you are FTP'ing to  68.241.192.57 (or whatever your WAN IP address happens to be).  Internally, from within your LAN, you can access it at teh 192.168.1.3 (or whatever its LAN address is), but from the outside world you've got to use the IP address of your WAN connection, otherwise known as your Internet IP address.  This may be disclosed on your router's configuration pages, or you can hit a "what is my IP" website.  Be aware that if your ISP give you a dynamic IP, it's subject to change from time to time, and in that case you'll probably need to use a DynDns type service.

Tried FTP from in house and outside of the house, no luck.

Still get:

Status: Connecting to 68.224.156.xxx:9000...

Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message...

Have everything open on my router 20,21,9000 and

all FTP check marks set on LINKSTATION PRO DUO...

Using FileZilla, maybe doing that wrong?

I input IP of NAS, a NAS Username & NAS Password and Port 9000.

Is this correct?

No. Port 9000 is not generally used for FTP.

Configure your router to forward FTP traffic on Port 21 to your linkstation's IP.

Configure your FTP software to connect to your IP address (or within your LAN to your LinkStation's local IP).

Configure your FTP softwrae to use port 21.

Ensure that the LinkStation is set up for FTP service and that one of the shares has FTP enabled.

Connect.

That's about it.  FTP is old, but still in widespread use because it just works.
