Title: DriveStation Duo: Tried to setup with RAID1: now it's bricked
Post by: dnwake on July 04, 2009, 08:11:06 PM

I have a DriveStation Duo.  Initially I connected it to my Linux box and it showed up as two disks fine.

However, I wanted RAID 1, so I used the RAID Utility off my Windows laptop to try to set it up with RAID 1.  However, this failed and ever since then I can't connect to the DriveStation at all.  If I try to run RAID Utility it says "Device not connected to the PC".  If I try the Setup Utility I get the same message.  I have tried both USB and Firewire connectors.  I also tried Setup Utility off my Mac and I get the same result.

I am guessing that either there is a hardware issue or that the RAID controller is somehow screwed up.  Is there anyway to reinstall the firmware on the RAID controller?

Cheers,

D

I should add that when I initially ran RAID Utility to install RAID 1 it _did_ connect properly and show the drives.  However ever since then it's been unable to connect.

Is it possible to see the HDDs (i.e. in Disk Management for Windows or the Mac Disk Utility) when the device is connected?

I've exactly the same problem. My DriveStation Pro Duo was running perfectly with RAID0. When switching to RAID1, the DriveStation starts rebuilding (LEDs 1&2 flashing continuously) and the drives can't be accessed. How long will this process take?

Jens

Pending on the size of the disks the process can take up to a day to complete, should be less until the unit is fully accessible.  If taking longer than 24 there is most likely a disk error, or a constant loop, if so try to power down, and access the unit

Rebuilding process is working since 25h for a 500GB RAID1 now. Can this be normal? Are there any utils availble to find any problems with the controller? Is there a way to reset the DriveStation in order to start the process again? Turning off and on the DriveStation starts the process of rebuilding again (LEDs 1 & 2 flashing).

The harddrives are new drives and they can be accessed by connecting them directly to the SATA-ports on the mainboard.
