Hi there, I'm having a bit of issues with my harddrive. As I said, it's a HD-CE1.0TU2 1TB external USB harddrive, and I can't get the thing to stop going into some sort of sleep mode after about 10-15 minutes of inactivity.
It's in a custom file system that I'm using on another system with USB support. However, if it hasn't been accessed after a certain amount of time, I'll hear the harddrive turn off/slow down (The light will turn off and it'll make a small click.) This issue is getting really annoying, and I'd like to know if there's anything I can do to stop it from sleeping on its own.. I'm fine with any negative side-effects that will come with it.
I'm comfortable popping the thing open if need be to change the jumper settings or something, but I'd prefer getting confirmation that it's what I need to do before I try and pry it open.. The casing is pretty flush-looking and doesn't seem too friendly to opening.
Thanks very much.
There is no real way to make it stop doing that because it has no on/off switch on it. There are other models that have the ability to be powered on and off manually with a switch. We do not support physically changing the units hardware configuration and therefore cannot give any walkthrough or suggestions on how to stop it from going to sleep on it's own. If you need a unit that can be left on without worrying about it shutting down on it's own I would recommend a different model of drivestation. Most of the other ones have an auto/manual switch on them so you can have them automatically power on and shut down or manually do it.
I'd really like a way to be able to stop the thing from sleeping randomly. I'm far past any eligibility of returning the thing, and likely past even the warranty. I understand wanting to protect a device from the technologically ignorant, but to limit a product's ability, as well as not giving me the ability to rectify something that I have an issue with seems... Poorly thought out.
This product is almost worthless to me until I can fix this issue.
I apologize for that but there really is nothing I can suggest to you to stop that. It is built into the design and we have no way of altering that. You may be able to try calling our tech support center but I doube there is anything we can do for that here either. Again it is designed to function exactly like that and the only way to solve that is to replace it with one you can manually turn on and off.
Wouldn't changing the jumper settings on the drive do exactly what I need? I've heard of other drives with the same "feature," as this one, where changing the jumper settings would stop it from spinning down.
I know you don't advocate doing such, but there really should be documentation for those that would like to.
We do not provide documentation because we don't support it. There may be information on it elsewhere.
