Title: Terastation III / Terastation Duo bug report
Post by: rinthos on June 22, 2009, 05:42:54 PM

Is there a prefered method for reporting bugs or typos on these devices?

Also is there a method for tracking bug/resolution status?

In the past I've posted here, but is there a specific communication path to take for bug-reports (vs. general support inquiries).

If this medium is ok, I will append to this thread, but please let me know and will follow the appropriate process.

Thanks!

Yeah, thats fine.  This forum is probably the best place because it is public and constantly viewed by techs who know who to contact for these matters.

Thanks will do.

So here's some findings which i think most should be fairly easy to duplicate:

Terastation Duo Only:

a-1) LCD Screen shows "HD Used 1_2_3_4_" as if to signify 4 drives are in-use, but the Duo only holds 2 drives.  Bit confusing.

-Firmware-level deal.  Also i find on boot sequence hd 3 and hd4 are indeed checked and pass power diagnostics...?

a-2) When connecting a 900GB USB drive with ~500GB of data (images, video clips, sound files, exe files, etc) , to a Terastation Duo w/ approximately 917GB free (2.0, but mirrored via R1), and pressing/holding the illuminated Function button to kick-off the copy to the specified share in the GUI, the Terastation Duo may stop pinging and periodically lose network connectivity during the copy process (usually occured about 40-50% of the way in).

-After waiting until completion (30 hours) the system access returns to normal. long time to wait, perhaps system is lacking resources?

Terastation III / Terastation Duo (both):

b-1) The Drive Spindown option, when Enabled, does not seem to function.  Upon physical inspection of a Terastation Duo, we found WD Green drives inside, not sure if this makes a difference or not, but this is how the unit shipped from factory (incase this is a drive-specific issue).

-Going to run more tests on this, but still fairly sure it's not working.

b-2) The External Web Access setting doesn't seem to let us 'change' the key.  For example if I set the External Web Access name to "Spoon" and the key to "Fork" it will work fine.  But if I try to change only the key from "Fork" to "Knife", it errors out saying "Spoon" is already in use (duh, but I want to change the key only).  This was found when using www.buffalonas.com .

-still outstanding issue.

b-3) When configuring UPS settings, the Web GUI options are a bit hard to gauge.  I.e. You can't select radio buttons until changing other options such as Sync, then save/apply changes, may have to refresh the page a few times until the Sync status is "sync'ed".  Would be helpful to improve this display as it almost seems erroneous.

-Just a usability comment.

b-4) Also impacts Linkstation Pro Duo Web access shows v2.2: Accessing Office 2007 files via Web Access changes their extension to .zip instead of .docx (for example).

---UPDATE: Working w/ support for awhile on this, we found a few things.

----1) Need to have the LAtest Firefox version (3.0.11) to resolve this in firefox.

----2) Still an issue for IE8.

----3) Does not seem to occur with IE7 w/ latest updates.

--Thanks again to support for helping to identify a workaround for us (firefox 3.0.11) until the IE8 side can be worked/resolved.

Just a few feature requests/feedback:

c-1) On System Power Mgmt the LED dimming options don't seem practical since they don't affect the LCD screen.  Support mentioned these only impact the drive LED's, but I simply close the Drive door so I can't see them.  Perhaps the LCD screen brightness could be configured to Dim when idle?  (similar to a cell phone).

c-2) Would be nice to be able to set quotas on file-systems/shares directly in cases where I have shared CIFS shares or NFS exports.  I could have multiple users writing to the "image-repo" share but don't want it to take up all the space on the TS.

c-3) Progress status updates on the Left Pane of the Web GUI + on the LCD screen would be greatly appreciated.  For example when RAID scans are going on, having to log in, go to the Storage tab, and scroll to the right seems a bit much for Raid Scans, perhaps an easier way in general to view.

Overall, happy w/ the devices we've got (beat our LS Pro Duos considerably) but a few small quirks thus far.  Thanks again!

Updated above post.  Special thanks to Caleb/Kaleb w/ Buffalo tech support for helping to find a workaround to the Office2007 file format issues.
