I am trying to attach a Western Digital MyBook 3Tb USB 3 drive to my LinkStation LS220D (firmware 1.65-0.12) to use as a backup.

I attached the drive and under Drives --> USB Drives it shows USB Disk 1 with a status of Dismounted / Plugged.

Based on other information, I assumed that it was because the drive is NTFS, so I booted my PC using a CentOS live DVD, re-partioned the drive to a single partition, made it bootable, set the partition type to 83 (linux), then  formatted the partition to XFS before shutting down the live DVD and moving the drive back to the LinkStation.

I am still seeing the drive as Dismounted / Plugged and can not access it to format it with the LinkStation or set it up for backups.

I have backed my NAS up over the network using Linux on multiple occasions and I really want to just setup the NAS to back itself up occasionally instead of having to mess with it manually.

Any suggestions?

Persistence pays off...
1) Using CentOS live, I changed the drive to GPT/GUID partition table, using gdisk, then formatted the sole partition I defined as XFS (mkfs -t xfs /dev/sdd1 in this case).
2) After hooking the drive back to the LS220, I restarted the LS220 which then saw an un-formatted drive
3) I let the LS220 format the drive
4) I restarted the LS220 again after the format was complete and it recognized the drive as usbdisk1 and mounted it
5) In the Shared Folder List, I set the Backup flag on usbdisk1 (the WD MyBook 3Tb drive)
6) Now I could finally see the usbdisk1 as a destination for the backup, which I have setup as an incremental (differential) to run every Wed at 11:30am.

Hopefully this information will be of some use to others trying to get a USB backup drive working on a LinkStation.
