Title: Time to erase LinkStation
Post by: Clive-D on June 09, 2017, 01:55:07 AM
I've seen other posts on this topic, but I have a LinkStation 6TB (2x3TB) and thought I'd freshen it up as it has not data on it and was not staying connected.
1/4 took nearly 20 hours, I came down this morning and 2/4 is set for 1592 mins - 26.5 hrs, 3.8% done.

This is a complete joke, nearly five days to reformat a drive.

If I shut down I assume I won't be able to reformat it? I'm going away at the weekend, do I have to leave my machine on whilst out?

Nightmare. Anyone want to buy it? I really don't get on with the interface!

So the data erase function does a seriously thorough job of deleting the data. It does a Zero-write and a One-write of every sector, twice. Yes, it takes a long, long time.

Just deleting the array and recreating does a drive format, and takes like 20 minutes max. There's no way to stop it, unfortunately. The good news is that you will know for a fact that those drives are in good shape.

This is true, and I wouldn't mind so much if the software gave me an indication of the time involved before I started (which has been a reported issue for a number of years, so surely can't be that difficult to write into the software?).
10 hours later, only 977 minutes (16.3 hrs) to go for 2/4, so it would seem it is reasonably accurate on the time involved.
I needed to work on a project and wanted to set this up to share files. The bloody process has put me on hold for 5 days. What frustrates me is the drives should be in good shape, I just don't think I set them up well when I bought the product. Basically new drives!
