Title: TeraStation Pro II - A Couple of Things...
Post by: discgolfdc on June 22, 2009, 02:36:44 AM

Hello all.  I am new to the forum, and was wondering if anyone might be able to answer a couple of questions I have concerning my TeraStation Pro II...

(1) I am a bit concerned about updating the firmware (it currently runs version 1.23), as a good amount of feedback has circulated about all sorts of bugs in the different F/W versions.  I did try upgrading to V1.33  a while back (I'm fairly certain that was it), only to find that it made it difficult for my TS to shut down.  I wound up forcing a "downgrade" back to 1.23.  Is there any general consensus on what the best version of firmware is, to date?  Any issues thus far worked out?  I'm curious.  I do like to maintain my equipment at peak performance, but if a later version of F/W cripples it some, I'd rather not.

(2) Just this evening, I noticed that my TS wasn't linking up to my network.  I was getting the "NO LINK" status message in the display.  I turned everything on-again, off-again, on-and-off-again...  I changed all the wires, I changed my hair color...  If it was there to be changed, I changed it out to try to isolate the problem.  I hit the INIT button and went through that.  No good.  Still "NO LINK."  Through all of it, the "Link/Act" light was as dark as night.  Not a single blip from it.  Somehow, changing back to my old router was what ultimately seems to have awakened my TS from the dark ages.  I was originally running a Linksys WRT54G, and, for about three weeks now, have changed it out for a D-Link DIR-655.  A little faster, a little sexier...and a whole lot less automatic reboots.  Anyhow, I had been able to access my TS through the DIR-655, with only one or two instances of the whole "NO LINK" thing arising.  Usually, a restart of the TS would take care of it.  Tonight, though, it was inconsolable.  It didn't want to link up for anything.  I even tried giving it a treat.  Wasn't having it.  Then, I went forward with the router switcheroo.  I put the old router back into the equation, and after a little boogeying, it decided to link up with its old buddy.  I screamed, "hallelujah," but was concerned that I now had two routers performing separate functions, and the idea behind the NAS it to have it attached to my unified network - not a separate network!  Anyway, after getting it to realize that it had a network wire plugged into its butt with the old router, I shut it down, then put it back into the D-Link DIR-655, and, voila...  It linked up.  I'm worried that this is a "temporary" thing, that the whole "NO LINK" thing may decide to come back unannounced.  Is there a known issue of any sort between the TS Pro II and any GigaBit routers, particularly of the D-Link variety?  I figured TCP/IP is TCP/IP with these things...  I even tried attaching a slightly older dedicated switch to the router to expand it (not that I'm sure why some people who claim to have had similar issues), but initially, that didn't work.  Only after I plugged it into the old router first, did it decide to come back to life.  I'd imagine that if I took the whole switch out and just plugged the TS into the router now, it would work the same.  Any ideas as to what might have brought it back to life?  I'm not much on silicon CPR.

Thanks!

For anyone having similar issues, I advise trying different ethernet cables, and if that doesn't help, contact us for an RMA.

discgolfdc set up an RMA with us.

1. Use firmware 1.25 ot 1.27. Its more stable then 1.33 which still have a couple of issues to figure out.

2. When you boot up, is there a chipset ethernet error msg shown on the LCD?

Have you tried on other switch/routers yet?
