Title: HD-LBU2 can I backup 2 different laptops
Post by: rj123 on May 30, 2017, 11:05:51 PM
I have a buffalo HD-LBU2 hard drive which ive used in the past to back up my MacBook. I now have a new HP laptop and want to back that up too. Is it possible to do so with 2 different laptops using the same hard drive? I have connected it to the HP but nothing happens. Help! Stuck.

Did you format the drive on your Mac? If so it is likely using a file system native to Mac that Windows can't read. It is possible to use the same drive on both systems but it will have to be formatted with exFAT in order to do this.

Thanks. Is that difficult to do? I have only ever used the hard drive with my mac so I guess I did. Will formatting it with exFAT potentially risk losing all my files already stored on it?

It won't "potentially" risk losing your data it will definately erase it. Look at the below link on how to do it:

if this drive is your only copy of some of that data, it's not a backup. It's the primary. I would suggest having more than one copy. Hard drives fail.
