Title: Loosing Connection / LS421DE freezes regularly.
Post by: ice2k8 on February 18, 2017, 02:19:24 AM
Hi,

I have a LS421DE and use it in my home network as a simple fileserver. The LS421DE mostly works for 1 or 2 days and then just seems to freeze. I can't connect via afp:// or smb:// nor does the web interface work. It does not respond to pings either. If I unplug the power cord, it will work again for a day or more and then freeze again. I have had this problem since the beginning. As I don not use the LS very often, I did not do anything about it until now. But if the problem persists I have to buy another NAS, as this gets annoying.

I have a Mac OS X environment and use a FritzBox 7940 as a Router. Here are the LS Basics:

Firmware Version:   1.81-0.03
Serial Number:   80060334517441
IP Address:   LAN Port 1 192.168.44.212
Workgroup:   WORKGROUP
Storage:   Array1
334.4 GB / 916.6 GB (36.4%)

My questions: Is there something like a log file where I can fence in the problem? Is the LS421DE defective? Anyone else having a similar problem? Can anyone tell me some steps for trouble shooting?

Regards,

Rainer

The problem is your LS421DE is updated to the latest firmware which causes it to crash and not work after a while being on.  Buffalo hasn't bothered in cleaning up their crappy firmware version bug, which is nonsense.  Very well discussed on these forums.

Solution is to downgrade to a working fw version and remove the DNS address, under network settings so that it won't nag that there's a new version.

After that, you'll be smooth sailing with a working NAS box that can stay on for a long time and not crash.

Thanks for the quick info. Can I downgrade to an older version?

its definitely possible if u can find an earlier version somewhere. Buffalo of course does not have them to download
1.34-0.95 is what you're looking for.

Just to conclude this thread: I have found and downloaded the 1.34 Firmware. There is a windows installer, which can be found on the web. (Drivers.softpedia.com). The installer is Japanese only, but Google Translate on the iPhone did the trick. I directly connected the LS421DE to a Windows Laptop with a crossover cable. It took the installer two retries to find the LS421DE, but after that I could easily install the older firmware. I DID NOT loose my settings and data on the LS421DE, but of course I had made a backup before. So far the NAS works. I will post in a few days, whether the connection still is working and the LS421DE does not freeze.

Regards,

Rainer
