Title: Dead drives in Terastation
Post by: raydoc on January 16, 2017, 12:51:40 PM
Do I have to buy the replacements from Buffalo or can I simply match the drives and replace them?

That depends, did it come with drives?

The unit has two drives. Drive 1 (dead) is a Seagate Barracuda 1 TB. Drive 2 (presumed alive) is a WD green 1 TB. If I can simply replace the boot drive (1), have it reinitialize and restore the array, I would replace both drives with WD Reds. My assumption (hope) is that I put in a new drive and the array installs the bootloader on it automatically.

I believe the firmware is on both drives.  Does the Buffalo boot up and all, the RAID is just degraded?

Impossible question to answer unless i know what device you have.

I have:

TS-WX4.0TL/R1 which boots and says drive 2 is bad, running in degraded mode.
TS-WX2.0TL/R1 which does not boot and says drive 1 is bad. When it started telling me bad drive, degraded mode, I could still access the array. Once it was turned off, it will not restart, likely due to death of drive 1.

Oh, I swapped drive 1 and 2 and it still would not boot which is why I was thinking that drive 1 has the boot loader.

So now I have replaced the #1 drive. How do I now get it to rebuild the array from the #2 disk? I would prefer to try to save the data on drive 2 if possible. I see no "restore array" button . I see a "Cannot mount RAID" and "array1_mount_error" displayed. If I hit the "delete RAID array" button, I assume it wipes the array and I start again. IF that has to be the case, I will replace both drives at the same time.
