Hi I am looking to set up a Brother HL-4040CN network printer with the LS Quad print server. The manual for the LS Quad only mentions USB printers. Can I use the LS Quad print server by conecting the printer to my router? Or does it have to be a direct connection using one of the USB ports on the LS Quad.
Thanks...

The print server feature is for use with usb printers only and the printer would need to be hooked up directly to the Link Station.
Thanks - I tried connecting using the ethernet to router and it did not work. Then used USB to the LS Quad. Working great on one XP machine, very slow on Vista. The Brother printer setup software could not see the LS print server during the setup, so I cancelled out of one screen and it showed up in a second screen (which did was not displayed in the printer setup manual) - very odd. Then, Windows prompted me to specify the driver when I attempted to print. My printer was listed, so it seems to work. All in all - the setup process was very different from the documentation process, but it seems to be working.
In researching the setup, I was trying to determine the pros and cons of using the LS print server vs using peer-to-peer (hooking the printer directly to the router). I'm presuming that large print jobs would work faster from the printing PC since it would cache on the LS.
I did not have time to try the Vista machine again, but may need to reinstall. It was VERY slow, with the applicaitons greying out, etc.... but finally would print. The older XP machine was very fast.
Thanks for the clarification.
Hi - this issue has continued to get worse, to the point that I can't print on the Vista laptop. I tried installing as a local printer, per another post and the printer shows up as Ready, but never prints anything that I send to it.
Any help is appreciated.
Why are you connecting a network printer to a linkstation?
If its a network printer then connect it to your router!
Davo - thanks for the reply. I am using the print server on the LS and per the above post (and from the manual) thought that I needed to use the USB attachment directly to the LS. This setup works fine with multiple XP and W7 desktops and laptops in my home network. The only computer with problems is a Vista laptop.
Are you stating that the better setup is to have the printer directly connected to the router? Will the LS printserver still function with this setup? I have a D-Link DIR-655 and do have a USB port.
Thanks - John
