Hi,
Apologies if this is answered elsewhere but I've not been able to locate a definitive (up to date) solution so I'm hoping someone here can help with my problem. I have a Linkstation LS-V1.OT-EU which works perfectly internally. I also previously managed to set up Web access through BuffaloNas.com and was able to access from outside my local network.(although I had to set this up using the Advanced settings as the Easy setup did not work).
I have now changed ISP and am having REAL difficulty in setting up Web access to the Linkstation correctly. I am now using Virgin Media and have their VM Hub 3 with a version of firmware (ending wih .88T) which, I am assured, supports port forwarding (although UPNP is not available). I therefore tried forwarding the port which worked with my previous ISP but no joy.
Thinking that the BUffaloNas name *may* have been tied to the IP Address under the original ISP I went into Linkstation settings and tried to change the BuffaloNas name. However that produced the "Error accessing BuffaloNas.com, check internet settings." message. When I checked the settings the DNS values were incorrect but I was unable to change them (greyed out). I then disabled Web Access and saved the settings, then re-enabled Web access and saved and the DNS values are now correct, as is the Default Gateway. However, trying to save any changes still produces that same error. I'm assuming that, with the change of ISP, the Linkstation will have been "off net" for too long and that subsequently the BuffaloNas name will have been disabled, but am not away of any way of re-activating. or re-registering it. Is this possible?
Furthermore, I noticed that the port number originally assigned by BuffaloNas.com now appears to have changed. This is not editable in the Linkstation setup and appears greyed out so I can only assume that somehow, the LS has managed to connect with BuffaloNas.com to get the new port?
I have changed and tried so many things now that I am no longer confident that I know what I am doing any more. Can someone please clarify what values I need in the following
On the Linkstation:-
Web Access Advanced settings External Port? (Currently the 'new' port number)
Web Access Advanced settings Internal Port Port? (Currently 9000?)
On the VM Hub 3: -
Local IP address? (currently a local static address)
Local start port?
Local end port?
External start port?
External end port?
Protocol (Currently 'both')
Any and all suggestions gratefully accepted.
"Error accessing BuffaloNas.com, check internet settings."
This usually means you have the wrong DNS and/or gateway set on the NAS, check the network settings tab.
Thanks, I did find that suggestion in my searches, and sure enough, the first time I checked they were wrong. Which is why (as I said above) I disabled and re-enabled access to correct them. They are now correct but I still get the error.
Then reset the unit via the admin page -> System -> Restore / Erase -> Restore Linkstation and once done go through the web access settings again.
Is your ISP allocating IPv6 addresses or using DSLite at all by any chance?
Not sure about IPv6 - but I don't believe so - and I am definitely NOT using a DS Lite.
When I re-set I will presumably need to re-create any users/groups etc? And can you provide a definitive guide to the settings I queried please? The external and internal port settings on both Linkstation and router?
Many thanks
You don't use DS Lite but your ISP might.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPv6_transition_mechanism
Once reset go to the advanced web access settings.
Web access service: Enabled
Use Buffalonas.com: Enabled
Choose a name and key.
Auto configure firewall (UPnP): Disabled.
Put the external and internal ports to 9000.
Save the settings.
Then go to your router and open port 9000 to the Linkstations local IP, talk to your router support for this or check https://portforward.com/
Many thanks. Things seem a little clearer now. Presumably when I open the 9000 port to the Linkstation I will need to forward the BuffaloNas assigned port to 9000. i.e. If, when I sign in to BuffaloNas using my BuffaloNas name, it directs me to 'h t t p://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:nnnnnn' I need to forward external port 'nnnnn' to internal port '9000'?
Correct
Managed to find the time to follow your advice tonight and am l,eased to report full success. Once I'd reset the Linkstation and forwarded the port everything worked perfectly.
Many thanks for your help.
