Title: Which best suits my needs?
Post by: Martlet on June 14, 2009, 09:24:35 PM

I don't know squat about these things, so I'm hoping for a little help.  I searched the forums and found some information, but some I don't understand and others don't completely answer my question.

I currently have a laptop that I've stored my movies on, and lug it around when I'm on the road.   It's getting full, and it's also a pain when I'm trying to watch a movie that's on my laptop through the television.   I was originally just going to get an external drive, but I started looking around.  I saw the 1TB Linkstation Pro and the 1TB Linkstation Live, and they seem to be a better fit for something that's primarily going to be movie storage.   Am I correct in understanding that I can be at my camper and access the unit via the web to watch movies while away, even though the unit is at home?  I assume the quality would be better if I brought it with me, due to the connection speed, but how durable are they?  Will they be fine in a motorcycle saddlebag?

Lastly, for now, what's the difference between the Live and the Pro?  Which would be better suited to my intended use?

Thanks in advance for helping me out.

Hi Martlet,

Generally for entertainment purposes, I would definitely go for the Linkstation Live since Buffalo has tried to make it into a multimedia unit.

You can utilise the web access if the Linkstation is at home, to access your movie database. That is, if your connection is fast, otherwise you can forget abt watching movies if your connection are less than 1mb cos it would be very laggy.

Would they fit into a motorcycle saddlebag?

Yes they would fit but make sure you protect it well.

To be honest, just get a external USB or Firewire drive (Drivestation, drivestation combo or ministation) if you are going to watch movies and bring it on trips. There's no point to get a network drive unless you are just going to leave it at home and accessing it from the internet by web access.

Thanks!   I've been considering doing just that, but I was intrigued by the other options.   My home television has USB ports, could I stream directly from the box to my television?

No, the USB ports are only for a printer, USB drives, and (depending on the product) APC backup connection. You cannot access the TS/LS from them.
