So I have a Linkstation Duo- LS-WX 1.0TB.  It works great and has never had any issues.   I do have it set up as a 500GB drive so that one side mirrors the other side.  I also have it mirrored to Amazon Cloud Drive so that any changes I make on the NAS get captured on ACD.   My question is this...the unit is getting old. not positive but maybe 6 years old.   The fan on the unit is ALWAYS running (I've been told not to use the auto option that it has) and I know that it can't run forever.   I think I'm fine if something ever happened to the unit as I have it backed in in 2 ways, but what steps can I consider to ensure the longevity of the unit and not have to worry about data recover if/when it does stop working?

I've talked to a lot of customers who don't have a backup and then feel betrayed when a 7 year old NAS loses its' lunch and the data too. You are about 20 miles ahead of that, so good job!

If it's me, I just keep backing up and run it until it dies. That way you can get the best unit that's on the market right then, unless you are looking for faster speeds or better functionality right now.

I'd test one of your backups to be safe.

OK...So how do I test the backup side of the NAS?   

I can see all the files on ACD so I know that piece of the backup is working

So long as you know for sure your integration with Amazon S3 is working and is up to date, you should be golden.
