Title: Can I use a non Buffalo technology storage unit? HS-DHGL Linkstation question
Post by: tod@creativelookphoto.com on April 23, 2016, 10:15:49 PM
I have a Buffalo HS-DHGL LinkStation Live running Win7 on a PC.  Is it possible to remove all the drives from my Buffalo and put them in to another non Buffalo array to read them or do I have to use another of the same Buffalo system?  I just had someone try this for me but they said they could not see any files on the drive (I know there's files on it).

If you put it in a different NAS enclosure, it is unlikely to work, and worst case could be data-destructive.

Since that is a single-drive unit, you should be able to attach it to a Linux machine and recover files that way.

It used to be fairly arcane to do a Linux client install, but these days any old puter can be used to install Ubuntu and you don't need to know much to make it happen.

Thank you for this reply.  They did tell me that they tried Linux as well but could not see any files that way either.  My Link station is currently in Emergency mode and I have had no luck getting it out of that.

It is possible that you are in EM due to a hard drive failure rather than a chassis failure. The probably advanced age of that unit makes this fairly likely.

You are correct that the files may be present, but since it's a single drive unit, there's no raid array involved. Since it didn't show any files in Linux, that's a very bad sign.

At this point, you may want to consult with a professional data recovery company. Buffalo Americas partners exclusively with DriveSavers, and if it's physically possible to get that data, they can get it.

DriveSavers (http://www.drivesaversdatarecovery.com/welcome/welcome-buffalo-technology-customers/)

It's 100% free to find out if the data can be recovered, they'll pay shipping and not charge you a dime to evaluate the data and send it back if it won't be recovered.

I am familiar with Drivesavers and the company that has the drive now uses them too.  I think I will see if I can get it out of EM mode myself again.  I was not successful last time.  I tried and gave up.  Are there companies that can get it out of EM mode?  Any suggestions?

Can you please tell me how to get it out of Emergency Mode or point me to the right place to do so?
