Title: HDD's larger than 4tb in LS421E?
Post by: MikeRubin on February 29, 2016, 07:17:38 PM
According to the product data that Buffalotech circulates about the LS421DE, it appears that the largest drive it can see in RAID1 format is 4tb.  However, it's been awhile since that product info first appeared and 4tb drives were the largest available at that time.

There now are 5, 6, and 8tb NAS drives available.  Is the LS421DE able to see and use these larger drives in RAID1 or is the 4tb limit a result of the OS that Buffalo uses?

I rapidly am running out of space on my current 4tb drives.  If I can't upgrade the HDDs in this unit, I will need to buy another NAS.

The ST8000AS0002 (8TB) will work anyways.

Thank you.  I think you just saved me from having to buy a new NAS in addition to the new drives.

Are you running two of these drives in a RAID configuration?  I also note that this is an internal desktop model, whereas Seagate also produces a NAS-specific version.  Any issues thus far in using the general-application drive rather than the NAS-designated one?

Which of the Terastation models can take 8TB drives, please? Thanks, Jim

As an update:  I added two 6tb WD Red 5400 rpm NAS drives to the unit. It recognized them immediately as 6tb drives, allowed them to combine into a RAID 1 array, and allowed me to restore data from the attached USB drive. I also was able to replicate my previous settings using the GUI.   Everything seems to be working fine, the available capacity and fill percentage show accurately on NASNavigator, and my NAS no longer is in danger of running our of space at this point. The only downside is that it's taking forever to sync the two drives.

I was wondering the same in a older Terastation III  TS-RIX when released had up to 3tb drives.
I am going to buy a 4tb drive as test. I am running the latest firmware.
I am also trying to determine the controller used in this model....might have to take the cover off and look if I can't find specs. :) (no longer under any warranty)
I will update what happens in my topic here: http://forums.buffalotech.com/index.php?topic=23620.0

A 4tb ST4000VN000 was recognized with no issues.

I had another drive fail so decided to buy a 6TB ST6000VN0021
That drive was also recognized in the system with no issues.
