Title: Buffalo LS-QV4.0TL/R5 NAS LED Blinking Red 6 Times
Post by: JohnG999 on February 23, 2016, 10:06:00 PM
Hi - My unit has gone out and is blinking red 6 times.  I am going to try to replace drive #1.  I have a WD WD10EADS 1TB drive.  Do i have to replace with the old (exactly same) drive, or can I update to a newer version WD SATA drive? Thanks

6 times means the boot image is gone, so you need a new TFTP image. If you remove disk1 is the error LED still flashing in the same fashion?

Thanks for the reply.

I removed Disk 1 and it boots up with Error 4 (Red blinking 4 times), a RAID error.

Edit - performed requested action.

Are you sure its not 1 long - 4 short? What does the NAS Navigator say when it is in this state? What RAID mode were you using? Do you have a backup or need the data?

Thanks,

1) it appears to be 1 long and three short

2) NAS Navigator says Errors:
E13 - Error has occurred at RAID array 1
E16 - Disk 1 was not found
E23 - Disk 1 is removed from RAID array due to errors
I12 - The RAID array works under degrade node

3) It's in RAID 5

4) I have an old backup and, yes, I need the data

Ok, you should be able to access the data so backup it up if necessary, then replace the disk and rebuild the RAID

ok, thanks.  I will do this.

What are the requirements on the replacement drive?  The old drive is not in production anymore.

Will this work? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822236342#close

Or is there another suggested drive?

Thanks again!

Just use one that has the same specs (size, capacity, RPM and cache), the make does not need to be the same.

I had 4 of these: http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Intellipower-Desktop-WD10EADS/dp/B001IEZX3G
WD Caviar SATA 2, 32 MB cache, 5400, 3GB/sec drives - when reading online, they seem to have a high failure rate (this is my second).

This is the replacement version: http://www.amazon.com/Blue-Desktop-Hard-Disk-Drive/dp/B013HNYVLA
WD Blue SATA 3, 64MB cache, 5400 rpm, 6GB/sec

Will the Buffalo LS care about larger cache and higher transfer rate, or will drive be backwards compatible?

The replacement drive is more reliable AND cheaper - but that's only helpful if it will work.

Update - I bought a 1TB WD Red NAS HDD and have installed it in the LS Quad.

The Quad manual states that, when RAID 5, array should automatically rebuild when a blank HDD is added, but that's not happening.  If I follow the manual instructions to rebuild via the Web Interface (Disk Management / RAID Setup / Check the box by the new drive / Click on "Restructure RAID Array") will this damage my existing data?

The RAID will not automatically rebuild itself, you need to go to System - Storage - Array1 -> Rebuild RAID. This does not effect the data on the remaining disks but ensure you have a backup.

The rebuild process will take around a day to complete.
