Title: Replacement drive error
Post by: JWAYT on January 22, 2016, 01:09:55 PM
I'm replacing Disk 1 of 2 in my link station. Web access sees something there:
Disk 1, error, ST1000DM003-1ER1
Disk 2, Normal(EDP available), ST1000DM003-1ER1

Disk1 bay lights red. Status lights blue and info lights yellow, flashing code 12 (dimished mode).  There are no options to format disk1, while rebuilding Raid array doesn't offer a way to mount disk 1. Is my new hard drive any good? What is my next step?

Name:

It looks like the LinkStation is still seeing the old drive. Did you shut down the unit before replacing the drive? The LinkStation does not support hot swapping of drives.

Power down protocol followed rigorously.
I have since replaced the replacement harddrive. Bay is still red, error code 12 as before.

:'( As a check, I restored the original Disk1, and powered up. Disk1 has its own serial#, but the same error status signals as two brand new replacement drives that are the same model as working Disk2.

The controller recognizes any of the drives in Bay1 but ALL have the error status. This error is distinct from detecting the HDD was missing, which test was true.

How do I clear the controller's Disk1 "Error" status? Drives in Bay1. Perhaps it's not the drives, but the bay?

It's possible that this is a chassis error. Is the data still accessible? If so, I recommend backing it up, put the two good drives in the unit and perform a reset to default on the unit. Here is the procedure:

Restore Factory Defaults
To restore the configuration of the LinkStation, follow the procedure below.
The status LED will start flashing blue. It will start flashing amber when initialization begins (2 - 3 minutes).

I was able to reset it. My workgroup changed to WORKGROUP, but it still has the same problems. I swapped disk1 with 2 and it still has Error as Disk1 but Disk2 shows Removed.

At this point, I think the chassis is bad. So, I've wasted a lot of time, $50 for the new HDD, and now I still have to find a backup solution. I don't think Buffalo will be getting any more of my business.
