Title: Setup LS Quad
Post by: JohnG999 on June 09, 2009, 07:47:16 PM
Hi - a couple simple questions on setting up the LS Quad:

1 - Do I have to run the setup utility on EACH PC that will access the NAS? Right now, although other PC's can see the drive, only the PC where I installed the NAS from recognizes the IP address. Three of the PC's are XP and one is Vista.

2 - Similarly - if I am mapping shared folders on the NAS to network drives, do I need to do this on every PC?

Thanks - John

I recently installed a LinkStation quad & currently have a similar arrangement: 4 x WinXP laptops + 1 x Vista laptop.

I installed NASNavi2 only on 1 (XP) PC - the others can access the LS via 'My Network Places' in windows explorer - although don't have the functionality provided from the NASNavi application window. I'm not sure why you would want/need to see the network IP address. Other machines can access the LS menu, etc by typing in the IP address in a web browser (I've used Firefox, IE7 & IE8) & entering user name & password. Obviously you need to know the IP Address to do this & if your router is using DHCP (i.e. dynamic allocation of the IP Address) this may change from time to time. If you use the in-built e-mail report feature, the IP Address is reported in the e-mail anyway. I did not instal NASNavi on more than 1 PC because it appears to be a "non-english" version with windows that don't display properly - which I'm yet to resolve - response from tech support suggests it may be the wrong version and I should download an update (of the same version No. apparently).

If you want to use the 'Auto Power Mode' it would require all PCs to have NASNavi installed to turn the LS on when any 1 of them is running (& I assume OFF when none of them is running).

You would need to map the network drive to a drive letter on each PC (if you want to have a drive letter allocated to the NAS on each PC - but I have not tried to). I'm happy expanding 'My Network Places' to display the LS folders - although 1 new (WinXP) PC took a while to display them here - but that seems to be common when connecting to a new network using WinXP.

The included Memeo software can only provide instantaneous backup of files when they're saved on a PC if it is installed on that PC. It seems that this may only be a single-user licence but I'm not sure. This is based on the fact that clicking on the Memeo menu item 'Protect Multiple PCs' under 'Other Tools' links to the Memeo website to purchase more copies of it.

Thanks for the information.  I thought I had read in the forums that people more stable connectivity when setting up the mapped drive using the IP address rather than the device name (from My Network Places).  I have not tried the Auto Power Mode - are you using it?

I'm not sure that mapping the drive to a letter provides any performance benefit, but it seems cleaner than having to access through My Network Places, which is usually slow.

I just upgraded everything to gigabit access, but my experience seems similar to others on the forum, experiencing rather slow transfer rates.
