Title: I must be doing something wrong.
Post by: PeeBeds on December 23, 2015, 04:53:40 AM
Hi, so I bought a 4TB LinkStation 420 yesterday, plugged it in to my network, followed all the "instructions" and.......for the life of me, I cant work out how to add files to my shared folders!

To expand slightly;
The NAS is plugged in to my 8 port switch which comes from the router in another part of the house.
Ive installed the software on one of the PC's on the network (Running win7 64 Ultimate)
I can access the drive no problem, I set up a couple of shared folders with all the appropriate settings.
When I go to "MAP SHARE" on the NAS NAVIGATOR software, I get an error which says: Create a folder named 'share' before mapping the drive
Ive done this, but continue to get the same error.

If I explore the network through explorer, the LS420D88C: Linkstation is listed as a Media Device which I can access.....but theres no files on there as I cant find where to add them!

Similarly, if I run Twonky, I can see my shared folders, but again, I cant add anything to them!
I searched the forums, the only answer I found from the FAQ's was around Security Options in Win7, which Ive done, but it didnt make any difference.

Id there a true Dummys Guide to setting up a NAS somewhere?

Please tell me Im doing something wrong somewhere?

Double check that you have followed these steps exactly:

Now follow these steps to map a drive:

Followed the steps exactly....same result.

I wonder if the issue is because the NAS is plugged in to my switch instead of directly in to the router?

Its my firewall......disabled it and I can access the shared folders easy as pie.
