Title: Faking it 'til I can make it?
Post by: T-Dubs on September 11, 2015, 11:18:44 PM
Howdy, all.

I am the proud new owner of a Linkstation 421DE two-bay NAS and was curious about doing something a bit unconventional with the initial setup:

I will be running this unit in RAID1 and I want to max out capacity at 6 TB, which will require that I purchase two 6TB drives. Needless to say, these get pricey at this capacity, so I was curious if there was a way that I can build what essentially amounts to a degraded RAID1 array containing only one disk, then popping in the second one once I can get it purchased and letting the array "rebuild". What say you? Doable? I'm not worried at all about redundancy; all the data in question is backed up elsewhere just in case. I was just hoping to be able to start moving stuff to the NAS without needing to buy 2 expensive disks all at once. Thoughts?

Ok, so I contacted Buffalo support since I received no replies. Turns out my plan isn't a good idea. The reason is a single disk will be JBOD configuration, and moving to RAID1 from there once two disks are present requires all data to be deleted. So I guess I'm waiting until I have enough money to buy 2 6TB drives. Sigh.
