Title: TeraStation direct ethernet connect to server (no Router)
Post by: Marleau on August 07, 2015, 12:32:14 PM
Hello

I would like to know if I can do the following configuration. I would like to connect my server directly to the terastation 5400dn via Ethernet cable so i can use 1000 MBPS via ISCSI, with no router. (FYI: Server has multiple unused NICS) Create NTFS network shares so other servers on my 100 MBPS LAN can connect through the server to access the shares on the terastation.

Reason:  The server that the terastation is connected to has a nightly backup of 800 GBs. The 100 mbps LAN is too slow to handle such a large file each night. The other servers attached to the LAN have very small amounts of data to backup and are fairly small in size max 16gb.

Thanks

That configuration should work, but the difficulty will be setting the IP address of the TeraStation. I would say connect LAN 1 of the TS to your regular network so that it's easy to get to the GUI to manage it, then connect LAN 2 of the TS directly to the server. That way you can easily set a static IP on the TS and the server.

Thanks, would that be Port Trunking ? Do i have to enable it ?
TS IP is currently static on the lan

What IP would i use for ISCSI (LAN IP or Server to TS IP) ?

Not port trunking, that combines the ports. You want the ports separate. It doesn't matter what IP you use as long as the port on the TS and iSCSI client port on the server are in the same subnet.

Hi

I have the TS lan port 1 to my LAN with IP assigned and working.
Static IP 192.168.30.99
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Works fine on 100 MPS network

I connected the other TS LAN port 2 to my server NIC. Now I need to know what IP address to assign to my LAN port2 and what IP to my NIC. Also if DHCP should or shouldn't be enabled.

Last but not least how do i test the connection ?
