Title: Swapping drives between NAS boxes.
Post by: JakeSimpson on August 06, 2015, 09:42:37 PM
I currently have 2x4T (formatted as an 8T drive) drives in an LS-WVL/R1 box. The box itself is bricked, due to a bad firmware update (thank you buffalo, used the web front end of the box to it too! Awesome QA there.) but I'd rather like to be able to take the drives and just insert them into another LinkStation NAS - notably I can get my hands on an LS421DE. Are the formats of the drives compatible?

If not, what Linkstation boxes ARE compatible? I don't mind buying a new box, I'd just rather like to keep what is on the drives themselves if possible.

Not going to work, even if you switch the disks to another unit of the exact same model, since the firmware, kernal and other partitions are on the disk you will just be moving the problem to another unit.

If you dont have a backup (which you should!) then you will need to probably check with a data recovery company.
