Title: Format Time for ST3000DM001 in TS6-VHL
Post by: datapartners on July 27, 2015, 03:20:44 PM
Hello Buffalo experts. This is my first post here.

I have a TS6-VHL with latest 1.24 firmware, populated with 6 x Seagate ST3000DM001 disks in at as came from the factory (3TB 7200 RPM Desktop grade drive w/64MB cache). The current disk in question is Seagate PN: 9YN166-500 with latest CCH4 firmware. (look up these drives on newegg and see  33% of owners give the lowest 1/5, and 12% give a rating of 2/5 due to failures, vs just 45% combined in 3 or 4 or 5 out of 5 rating - Unreliable and NOT intended for NAS use).

Due to multiple disk and subsequent rebuild (after 2 days) failures over time with my 6 spindle R5 array on this , I have decided I would go back to R6 as came from the factory. I deleted my old (broken) array and replaced the bad hard drive in slot 5 (wouldn't even spin up when tested outside the array). As part of the process I decided to format Drive 1 using the web gui, however it is taking forever. I am waiting to create my new array, but it still says Disk1 is formatting.

My question is, approximately how long should this take? The NAS is not in production and has no active arrays on it - its only running process is to format disk 1.

Thanks!

I wouldn't trust it. If the drive is more than 3 years old, which is likely, replace it now rather than lose it and have to replace it later. If it's in warranty, RMA it.
