Title: LS-QVL: 600+ minutes to erase 4x 2TB drives?
Post by: jlai on June 26, 2015, 09:19:16 AM
So I've been running my second (spare) LS-QVL with 3x 2TB drives and decided to put another 2TB drive (same make and model as other 3 drives) and setup a RAID 5 array.  There was no RAID setup before.
I inserted the new 2TB that I just "diskpart cleaned" in Windows (drive was not new), but the LS-QVL did not discover the new drive, so I decided to do a full erase.
I kick off a full erase with all 4 disks in there and it estimates that it will take 600+ minutes to fully erase... does that sound normal?

Did I not do it correctly with adding a new drive to the array?

Yes, it does a 3 pass sector by sector low level erase.

Ok, thanks for confirming davo.

So, with regards to adding another drive, did I do it the right way?

After a restart of the LinkStation and updating the firmware, I was able to see the 4th drive and create a new RAID 5 array.

Thanks.
