Title: Failover questions
Post by: SlipStreams7 on May 26, 2015, 10:23:38 AM
I have a TS 3400 that has several hundred GB of files already stored on it. I have a second one on order that I want to use as "failover" for the first. I have 2 questions:

1) What I want is for the new Terastation to continuously mirror the first and "take over" if the first one fails. I believe this means I want to configure failover. If I understand this right, failover means having continuous full replication of the source to the target with the addition of automatically taking over host/ip address if the source fails. My question is, do I need to configure replication for all/any of the shares first before configuring failover? Or does configuring failover automatically mirror/replicate all shares/settings from the first one?

2) Is it going to be a problem that the existing Terastation already has a bunch of files on it (5.5TB total space, around 900GB used)? These files need to be part of the failover. After enabling failover, is there any way to check the progress of the existing files being copied over?

Thanks for your time and expertise,
-Brandon

There is a pretty good guide for configuring failover in the user's manual for the TS3400, available here:

http://d.buffalo.jp/TS3000/ (http://d.buffalo.jp/TS3000/)

In general, when you set up failover it should automatically replicate the data.

Keep in mind that they should be identical units with the same FW version to enable failover.

What about if the main Terastation is joined to an active directory? Does anything special need to be configured or is the domain joining part of the settings transfer process that occurs automatically?
