Title: Seagate vs WD which lasts longer - my experience
Post by: doobre on May 06, 2015, 11:32:59 AM
So I have x4 buffalo LSWXL 4Tb Nas units.
three contain Seagate (ST2000DM001) disks, one has WD (WD20EARS-00MVWB0)... one of them is still under a year old, so shows no trouble yet.

But of the other three units, the one with WD disks which is the second eldest unit (now 4years old) still has the original disks and they are going fine.. (fingers crossed)

While I have had to replace all the Seagate disks in the other two units (6 years & 2 years) already and now they are showing disk error again, "E30 replace immediately".. which I will do, but with WD's instead of Seagate..

So from data center facts. Seagate work fantastic at first but slowly start to decline, while Western digital may not work as incredible a seagate (Speed wise) out the box they have a much more constant speed and seem to last longer. Here is article from a year ago. Still very relevant as well http://blog.backblaze.com/2014/01/21/what-hard-drive-should-i-buy/

This shows what I mean as well. I worked at a data center and we replaced more seagates then western digitals that were under 2 years old. The majority of Western Digitals we replaced had a run time of 3 years plus. But it depends. What ones I worked with are enterprise drives.

If you want life dont get a green or low energy series. Best of luck

Off the top of my head no, but the green series for western digital have a green accent on them. There are a few models for the green. here is an example of there series of hdds, Blue is for normal consumer use but you can use it for a nas drive if you want. Black is for performance version of blue. All around this is the best drives for everyday use. Red are made to be used Nas or mass storage. I used these when I have to replace a drive. There not cheap either and if it came to it, I would use blue or even green. It just depends on your budget. Green 2 years easy, blue 2-3 years, black suppose to be 5, and red is 4-5 but this is not always true. So go off your budget and not the (This is what you should get because its the best and thats what it is for), No need to break your budget. Just ALWAYS!!!! make sure you have a 2nd source of your data on a different unit or other storage. 1 point of storage is not a backup and neither is raid.

I did not include purple as that is for Surveillance. Though a drive is a drive its just marketing for fancy options.
