I just submitted this as a support request but I figured I would ask the crew here if you have ever run into anything like this.

I have a brand new HD-LCU3 external hard drive.  My problem is that when the disk is idle, it sounds like it is constantly thrashing.  Like continual head seeking.

After disabling my backup software, windows search, etc and running Process Monitor, The only process that is writing to or reading from the disk is system, but only occasionally and to the MFT.  The size and lengths of these writes are almost nothing.  As far as windows is concerned, the disk is idle.

Now please pay attention to this because this is where is gets weird.  As I was rebooting to run a virus/malware scan from a rescue disk I noticed that after booting and the drive turning on as I was in my BIOS screen setting my boot order I could hear the drive STILL THRASHING.  So Windows isn't even loaded but this drive is still going crazy.

Back in Windows if I copy a file from the drive it quiets down and completes the copy but once it goes idle again it starts to thrash.

Does this make any sense to you?  Would the drive firmware be executing some sort of operation that the operating system would be unaware of?
