Title: Buffalo with one failed hd in raid 5 and 400 GB of data I want to transfer off
Post by: flm45 on March 14, 2015, 09:12:06 PM
Ok, so I came here to bounce a situation off some folks and see what the over all best strategy will be.  I have a client with a older Buffalo Terastation NAS with 4 drives in a raid 5 array.  One drive in the buffalo is showing as failed.  I was already planning to replace the Buffalo due to age and I have the replacement in my possession.  It is a 5400 8TB WSS.  The customer has 400 GB of pictures on the old NAS.  So, what is the best way to make sure it get all 400 GB's transferred to the new NAS with out losing any data?  Do I repalce the one bad drive and do a rebuild or just put the new NAS in place and do a transfer?  Then that brings up the next question, what is the fastest way to transfer the data?  I would like to just transfer the data and not worry about the failed drive but my fear is, what if another drive fails under stress of a very long data copy to the new NAS?  One of my challenges is this customer is 3 hours away and a rebuild of that drive could take hours and the do not have anyone with enough technical skills to swap the drive out.

Let hear what you got!
