Title: WZR-1750DHPD stops resolving domains
Post by: commodore_dude on January 31, 2015, 12:14:52 PM
I purchased a WZR-1750DHPD a couple of weeks ago. I was pleased with how quickly I was able to get it up and running and with the vastly improved wireless speeds, but within a couple of days I started having issues. It will start taking 30-60 seconds to resolve any web page, and eventually stop altogether (this is observed on all clients, both wired and wireless). This seems to be DNS-related, because services which rely solely on IP address such as my instant messaging client continue to work fine. The only way to fix it is to release/renew DHCP at the router, which sometimes has to be done multiple times per day and other times it will be fine for 2-3 days. I am sure it is the router and not my cable modem because when it occurs, if I connect my desktop directly to the cable modem and reboot the modem, I have no issue. If I then connect the router back to the modem and reboot the modem, the issue persists.

I am on the latest firmware I could find, 23709c. All default settings aside from my SSID/key, and additionally I reduced the TCP timeout from 3600 to 360 as I had seen some references to similar issues with other routers where this had helped (it did not help here). I also manually entered Google's DNS servers to see if it was an ISP issue, but that didn't help either (my ISP is Comcast). My cable modem is a Technicolor TC8305C, and has been 100% rock solid for wired connectivity (the wireless is another story, plenty of documented issues on Comcast's support forums which is why I purchased a new router and set the modem to bridged mode). I went with Buffalo because before I got this cable modem a few months ago, I had been continuously using a WHR-HP-G54 with Tomato firmware that had served me reliably for more than 7 years. I'm a little disappointed that this isn't working as smoothly as that workhorse did, but I'm hopeful there's something I'm missing, or a known issue with this firmware that is about to be resolved. I'd be happy to provide screenshots of any configuration screens or any other details I can.

I have to say I'm very disappointed in Buffalo here. No response to this post, and the only response I received to an email inquiry directed me to a third party forum. I didn't pay extra for DD-WRT to be preinstalled and warrantied just to be sent elsewhere. If Buffalo is going to put their name on a router and all over the branding of DD-WRT, they should stand behind it. I'll be returning this router and buying another brand instead.

I have been using this router for more than a year and been happy with it so far. Never ran into any problem.
