Hi,

I've had a LinkStation NAS 300Gb (HD-H300LAN) for some (>5) years now, and last year expanded it with an external 2Tb USB disk (a Buffalo DriveStation, HD-LBU2).

Recently I noticed one of the files stored on there (a FLAC music file from Rhythmbox's library) was showing up twice, a directory listing showed a second copy with what looks a "short form" windows file name in addition to the long name.  Although I've tried deleting it, and even deleting/recreating the original file, I still saw a similarly named extra file appearing.  There's even one that it says doesn't exist when I try to delete, even though it's in the directory listing and is found by the filename autocompletion...

So I thought it might be worth doing a Check Disk via the Maintenance option in the LinkStation's web interface.  I noticed the warning saying it may take a few hours and the restart automatically, I clicked the button to continue and the red light on the front of the drive started flashing. But just how long should it take for a drive of this size?  I've found messages on line saying several hours rather than a few, but I started it off some time before Christmas and it's still sitting there with the red light flashing away same as it's been doing for the last few weeks!

Fortunately the original 300Gb share is still accessible, so I've just been making do with that in the meantime.  But is there any way to find out just what the device is doing, and how much progress (if any) it's making?  Or is my only option to reboot the linkstation myself, and plug the drive directly into some other machine to run a check if there's still any problem with extra files appearing?
