Title: Folders disappearing
Post by: lorirobn on May 26, 2009, 10:37:29 PM

Hi,

I have had my LinkStation for several years, but have been using it extensively this past week to cleanup the folders on i and to backup all my music from my laptop.  The other night, a folder that I was cleaning up just flat out disappeared.  I thought maybe I deleted it by mistake (which would be very unusual for me, as I am extremely cautious).  I had the recycle bin disabled (had not even known about this function).  Tonight I deleted a folder within a folder as part of my clean-up, and next thing I knew, the parent folder is nowhere to be found.  This time I know for sure that I did not delete the parent folder.  So is something going on with my LinkStation?  Is the data there but I just can't find it?  Or is it lost forever.

Also, this time I had the recycle bin enabled.  My lost folder is not in there.

Does anyone have any suggestions for me?   Does this mean my LinkStation is bad?  Is there a way to find my lost folders? (now there are 2 of them).

Many thanks in advance!

Lori

First off, which linkstation are you using? What firmware version?

When you say that you're parent folder has disappeared, is it missing from (finder/explorer) or is it missing from the GUI entirely? (you should see it listed under 'shared folders')

Enter the IP Address of the linkstation into your web browser's bar and enter in the required username and password. Then, go to Disk Management, you'll see the total capacity, followed by the amount used. If you're data is still in there, there should be a sizeable amount being taken up.

I have a LinkStation, model HD-H160LAN.    The firmware is 2.05.

The parent folder has disappeared, but it's not the highest level parent folder.  I still have my "share" folder, and folders within that.  The folder that disappeared yesterday  was a folder within the "share" folder.  Everything else looks like it is there.  The disk is 95% full (not sure what it was before).  The red light on the LinkStation has been on, indicating that it's, too.  Could that cause it to act strange?

The folder that disappeared the other day was a folder within a folder of the Share folder.

The folder is missing from Windows Explorer.  Is there another way to see it?    I have tried opening explorer via "My Computer" and also via "Start --> Run--> linkstation name".

I hope it's there, somewhere...

Should I update the firmware? Not sure how to do so.  Am running a "disk scan" now...

Thanks,

Lori

lorirobn,

Are you the only person who accesses the data on the network or is there another PC attached? Also, the problem you're experiencing is due to the HDD on the LinkStation reaching near it's maximum capacity and it is possible that the file table has suffered corruption. These are merely theories until the previous question is answered though. I look forward to your post.

Hi Dustrega,

I am the only person accessing the data - and just my one PC.

The only thing I could think of, too, is the near-capacity HD on the Linkstation.

The ironic thing is I've been deleting data from my Linkstation in an effort to clean up (but did just add ALL my music to my Linkstation to back it up, which is close to 5,000 songs).

Hi,

Just wondering whether you solved this problem, as I am having the same issue (disk is full).

Thanks

No, as yet have not solved it.

Did you lose folders, too?

I have been deleting lots of stuff so my disk is no longer full, but I haven't found the missing folders yet.

Similar problem I think.  My drive get to 100% full, then the shared folders no longer displayed on the Admin console, nor can I connect to them via a Windows mapping.

One way I would have done it is to remove the internal harddisk and plug in to my linux system.

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR BUFFALO UNIT IS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY BEFORE YOU PROCEED!

The drive will mount and I would be able to see the share folders in one partitions.

Write down the share folder names I've created eg, Share,  Accounts, General, Techno but do not copy share folder names which I did not create eg, Mediaserver, Boot, info..

Remove harddisk from linux, install back into Biffalo unit and then boot it up.

Once fully booted, go into admin console and then to share folders setup.

Type in the name of the folders indivudiually.

Once all the share folders have been named as the same as what you saw in linux, the data will be back there.

Go into the share folders and see if data have appear.
