Title: Linkstation & DriveStation backup - which is faulty?
Post by: magendo_man on May 26, 2009, 06:07:49 AM

We have a LinkStation and a DriveStation for backup and are getting messages such as the following:

DISK Error Notification

HDD error occured

Disk(s) the error occurred:UnknownDisk(READ)

(READ) 27210024 sector:22 count:

Disk writting error

Some data may not be recoverable.

Immediate change of disk is recommended.

[LinkStationInformation]

 LinkStationName: BUFF1 (LS-GL)

 Time: 2009/05/25 11:55:13

If I run the Disk Check on either disk I don't get any indication of an error. Which disk has the problem? What should I do to resolve the problem?

TIA,

magendo_man

HDD error occured

Disk(s) the error occurred:UnknownDisk(READ)

(READ) 27210024 sector:28 count:

So are you getting any error (or diag) lights?

Hi PCPiranha

The LinkStation just has the Power light on, the Link flashing and nothing for the Info and Error lights.

Any suggestions?

Today's status report is:

Did it not show anything below  "disk error status" or did the message cut off for some reason?

No - there was nothing in the message below "disk error status"!

Does that tell you anything?

Try reformatting the drivestation, it seems that it is more likely the culprit

Try initializing the LS: Go to the web interface> Maintenance >Initialization> Restore to defaults.

What effect does 'restore to defaults' have? Does it wipe all the shared folders and wipe out the data?

No it will erase any user / groups / settings you have but the data will not be effected.

Hi PCPiranha

I reformatted the drivestation as you suggested - then ran a new backup of the linkstation shares.

I then got multiple messages similar to the following two:

LinkStation Status Report:DISK Error Notification:Error:Write  error

DISK Error Notification

HDD error occured

Disk(s) the error occurred:UnknownDisk(WRITE)

(WRITE) 915624583 sector:2 count:

Disk writting error

Some data may not be recoverable.

Immediate change of disk is recommended.

Since the reformat did not help, and you're getting write failures, there may be a problem with the USB drive. If the drivestation is still under warranty, please contact your local support office for a warranty exchange. If you have another USB drive, see if that works with the backup on the linkstation.

You should try initializing the unit, if you have not done so, it will get rid of any "stuck" files from the previous errors. Initializing the unit will usually fix most backup issues!

It does not delete data, just settings.
