Title: LS-Q4.0TLR/R5 installation and configuration problems
Post by: ibanez7 on May 22, 2009, 03:21:17 PM

Hello

I have a model:

LS-Q4.0TL/R5 from Buffalo inc. and am trying to figure out how to install this on my computer in order to perform backups over the internet. I have no cd in order to perform the installation and no user manual either. I need assistance in order to install and configure this unit. Can anybody point me in the right direction on how to install and configure this thing. Please help.

Thanks

You are trying to backup from the unit to another location?

The main thing would be in the "Disk Backup" tab. You can choose the target disk or folder from there. However, in order to do it over the web, you would first have to use some sort of VPN (Virtual Provate Networking) software to make your target location available. We cannot walk you through this because we cannot support another manufacturer's program.

First, it'll help if you have the diagnostic software. Get this link here: http://www.buffalotech.com/support/getfile/?nasnavi-215.zip

That will have the NasNavi utility, which will help you find the device's relevant information from your network. The NasNavi utility can also automatically map the network shares for you, which should make this a bit easier. As for backing up across the internet, Seth is basically correct. You'll likely want to look into VPN. That is your best bet.

Hello
Thanks very much for the help.

i downloaded the suggested file which i will try on Monday when i get back to work.

http://www.buffalotech.com/support/getfile/?nasnavi-215.zip

The problems I'm having are installing this thing.I went to the Buffalo site and searched the product using model number LS-Q4.0TL/R5. I then got these files: linknavi-lsql-110-wr.zip(which should be an iso which i which i burned on cd ), the nas navigator utility, the linkstatio_Quad_manual, and the firmware LSQL-105.zip.

Now i insert cd in go to start, run then type: f:\EN\LSNavi.exe and starts the installation.

At first i couldn't install it cause i kept getting an error that it couldn't detect the LS so i figured out that by holding the function button at the same time to power it on it finally detected something and proceeded to the next step which is the "Software Option list".From here i chose to install 3 of the 4 files presented:

Buffalo NAS Navigator2, Memeo(backup software), Linkstation (LS_QL) setup guide.

The file security tool is greyed out(unsupported by this windows version) and i didn't bother with the adobe reader 8.1

Now when i try to install these i cannot install the Memeo. So once i complete this i go on the desktop and can only see the Buffalo NAS navigator shortcut.By rights i should have 3 new desktop icons (the LS-QL black box, the NAS Navigator and the LS-QL setup results.txt )but only have one(Buffalo NAS navigator shortcut).

Then i opened the Buffalo NAS navigator shortcut and it's empty, there's nothing in there.

Any ideas on what to do or which steps i'm doing wrong.

Once i can install this and see it locally then i will look into creating a VPN in order to backup on the internet.(thanks for the suggestion)

Thanks for any help with this issue.

Does the navigator detect the linkstation if it's plugged directly into your lan port? If you haven't tried it you should. If it can, just set an IP and put it back on your network. Then you can configure it as normal from that point on.

OK here's where i am now. I couldn't install it on 2 pc's but finally installed it on a 3rd one (????) Why? i don't have a clue. Maybe missing some type of update or something but don't know what. Anybody have an idea?

Then i got in and configured it. I am now able to reach it from home and add and delete stuff no problem. Now i'm wondering how to configure the web access feature properly in order to have it more secure.

Any chance i can get pointers or a push in the right direction on how to do this?

Thanks for any help with this.

There shouldn't be much that you have to install on any computer in order to get the LS working.  You really only need the Nas Navigator and the memeo if you wish to use it.

So, the Nas Navi isnt showing up on two computers?  Have you checked to see if they are all on the same subnet?  Also you can try disabling all firewalls that might be present on this computer (for an easier way boot the computer into safe mode with networking).

In order to have a more secure web access page you should enable HTTPS/SSL encryption and set up access restrictions.  If you need any further instructions please let me know
