I found that after a couple of minor brownouts last night my linkstation is not working- the lights were on but I could not access the drive. I could not recycle the system using the power switch (it would not power down) so I unplugged it and plugged it back in, no signs of life. Obviously it looks like i took a power hit - is there anything I can try to recover ?
If not, what kind of HD is in the linkstation, I want to try to get a shell case and transfer the HD over - since I think the data may still be ok, but I am not sure (I havent tried to open it) what the drive inside is, what connectors it has, etc.
Since this is an XFS drive will I be able to access the data on the drive from another case using an XFS capable system like Linux if I transfer it ?
Thanks
Yes you can plug this drive into anything that can read XFS, Linux definitely should be able to mount the data partition.
....Though depending on your model, taking the drive apart could void warranty!!
Kevin,
The model is the DH500GL.
Thanks
DH500GL is the Linkstation Live.
It should read something like HS-DH500GL if I'm not wrong.
Before you carry on, make sure your warranty is already over if not, then plese sent it to your nearest Buffalo Service Centre.
Don't go and plug in to another shell/casing until you are sure the harddisk is ok.
Borrow or buy a SATA/IDE to USB cable & power adapter and plug the adapter into the harddrive and see if your computer(linux installed) can see the drive.
I had the controller fail on my DH500GL and removed the drive. I installed Ubuntu on my PC and got a USB adapter. I plugged in the drive and voila! I can see it on my 'desktop'. My question is: where's my stuff? The "share" folder is empty. I don't think my data got erased since the drive is over half full, I just don't know how to access it. When I plug the drive in, Ubuntu mounts 3 drives: a 400GB drive that it can't access, a 303 GB drive with some stuff on it, and a 500 GB drive that appears to have all the data on it. The latter drive is the one that's half full.
Where should I be looking for my stuff? Is there something else I need to do?
Thanks,
Jim
Dustrega -
Thanks for the reply. Things may not be as dire as they appear (I hope!). I was wrong about the 3 "disks" and their sizes. You'll have to forgive me if my terminology is not correct as this is my first foray into a Linux OS. As you probably know, Ubuntu uses the GNOME desktop app so I don't know if this is my problem or not. But here is what I get when I plug in the drive:
499.0 GB disk mounts but I get an error from GNOME that says "Could not display "media/disk-1". No application is registered as handling this file"
304.3 MB disk mounts (not GB as I previously said) that contains the following folders or files: lost+found, conf_save.tgz, initrd.buffalo, u-boot.buffalo, u-boot-buffalo.ord and ulimag.buffalo
510 MB (not GB) disk mounts that has the following folders: bin, boot, dev, etc, home, lib, lost+found, mnt, modules, proc, root, sbin, share, sys, usr, var, www and tmp (a file)
So I think maybe the disk is okay and that these are the partitions? I can click on any folder to see what's in it. I just can't do anything with the 499.0 disk, which is where all my data is.
Do you still think the file table is corrupt? I'd really like to get my 4,000-song iTunes library back!
TIA,
Jim
