Title: LS220D not found by NAS Navigator 2
Post by: tlynch on October 12, 2014, 07:04:20 PM
I have spent the day setting up a new LS220D, and trying to get machines to see and access it.  I had no problems setting up up a Lenovo X1 running Windows 7.

When I install NAS Navigator 2 on other machines, it cannot find the device. I can browse to it by IP address, though. The other machines are:
Lenovo G700 running Windows 8
ASUS X53U running Windows 7

I don't understand why one machine can find the device, and the others cannot. Any guidance is appreciated.

Regards,
Tom

Your issue is with the firewall on those computers. You need to see what application is managing your firewall and add the buffalo nas navigator to the trusted programs.

Thanks!

I'll tinker with that tonight.

On my Windows 7 machine Windows Firewall already had an entry to allow NASNAVI.exe.  I run AVG for antivirus, and for good measure I added NASNAVI.exe to the allowed programs in the AVG firewall, but I still can't see the NAS via NAS Navigator.

Thanks for the suggestion, though.

I turned off Windows Firewall and restarted.  Now I can see my device via NAS Navigator.  Awesome!

Joma90, I really appreciate your help!

Tom

PS   For anyone trying to address a similar issue: the restart was needed to make it work.

The plot thickens slightly:

I was successful on a Windows 7 machine by following your suggestion regarding disabling Windows Firewall.  I have shifted to a Windows 8 machine to whip it in to shape, and I have less success.

I disabled Windows Firewall.  I added an application exception to the AVG firewall and restarted.  NAS Navigator Still cannot find the NAS.

Any specific suggestions for Windows 8?

Thanks for all your help!

Sadly, I am now moving backwards.  The Windows 7 machine that had successfully found my LS220D no longer does.  When I restart the machine, then start NAS Navigator, the LS220D shows briefly, then disappears from the NAS Navigator window.  It still shows up in Windows Explorer as a media device on the network.

So close, and yet so far.  It is taunting me.  :)

Still no luck on Windows 8.

Thanks for all the help!

Joma90 pointed me in a good direction, and I think I have it fixed.

Seems that AVG firewall was the issue.  On my Windows 7 machine I disabled AVG's firewall, re-enabled Windows firewall and restarted.  I see my NAS no problem, and the respective firewalls were in the same state I set them to before restart.

Time to apply this lesson to my wife's Windows 8 machine.  As soon as she goes to sleep.

Thanks Joma90!

I think I have the complete solution now.

Once I identified AVG firewall as the issue, I did some research.  Turns out I needed to add the IP address of the NAS to a whitelist.  I logged onto my router and set the NAS to have a fixed IP address.  Then I went into AVG and added that IP address to the whitelist.

This approach has been successful on one Windows 7 and two Windows 8 machines.

Thanks again to joma90 for getting me pointed in the right direction!
