Title: Failed to send test email
Post by: Benzman on September 14, 2014, 06:52:52 PM
Been trying for a very long time to get "Email Notification" to work.  Yet, with every setting I change, nothing works.  Nothing.  Every time I click on "Send Test Message", I get "Failed to send test email" error.

Frustrating.  Because when I run telnet through Terminal (Mac OS 10.9.4), I get this response...

telnet mail.twc.com 587
Trying 107.14.73.68...
Connected to dnvrco-twc-vip.email.rr.com.
Escape character is '^]'.

Got a similar response from gmail too.  This means to me that the port is open and working.  However, the LinkStation cannot send any mail notifications.  I have searched and searched and read and read every related post here and out in the wild, but have come up empty with most threads just ending with no resolve.  Some threads have suggestions, but when tried, don't resolve the issue.

What I have tried - in all combinations...

Different SMTP Server Addresses. (I have a few email addresses, yahoo, tw, gmail, etc.
Every possible SMTP Port number. (25, 465, 587, etc.)
All Authentication Types. (POP before SMTP, LOGIN(SMTP-AUTH), and CRAM-MD5(SMTP-AUTH / CRAM-MD5).
POP3 Server Address when applicable to the Auth Setting.
POP3 Port Number when applicable to the Auth Setting.
All SSL/TLS settings. (SSL/TLS, STARTTLS)
Checked and rechecked Username.
Checked and rechecked Passowrd.

I have even tried opening ports 465 and 587 on my router, suggested in an older post and that didn't work either.

So, is there anyone out there who has gotten email notifications to work with their LinkStation?  My firmware version is 1.68.

If your using TWC(Time warner Cable) have you tired these settings,

SMTP Server Address: mail.twc.com
SMTP port: 587
Authertication Type: LOGIN(SMTP-AUTH)
SSL/TSL: Enabled
Username: Email address
Password: Password to email address
*** under Recipiants Address *** you need to add a email. you can use the same if you want.

Port forward IP of LinkStation to the port 587, Also make sure you use a static ip. works better in my opinion.

If this doesn't work do a factory restore and then try again, if not then force update the current firmware, factory restore after that and try again.

Just saw this, so sorry for the late reply.

For me 1.68 does not work.  1.63 and 1.65 actually do work.  This is on the LS-WXL/R1 Series drives.

So it seems to me that 1.68 broke something.

1.68 seems to work for me. recommned either updating to 1.69 or factory restore on the unit. this will not delete the data. This will only reset all the settings.

Thanks for the reply.

On a hunch, I went ahead (before you replied) and updated one of my 1.68 units to 1.69.  No such luck, still get an error sending the test mail.

Would the factory reset do anything differently than a firmware upgrade?

In honesty I cant say yes or no. I sure how the firmware actually applies the updates to the unit. If it just updates certain parts or replaces the whole firmware with a new one. If that doesn't work maybe there is a possible firewall issue on your router. Since you technically are using ports to send and receive emails that could do it as well.

Though with a firewall issue, you wouldn't expect any of them to work, but since a couple do, you would think it wouldn't be a port issue.

I may try the factory reset, but a may think about it some more.  That is the only thing I would want that doesn't work, and so not sure if I really need it that bad.

Thanks,
Jeff

You can try downgrading firmwares to like. 1.64

You would have to do a force update to get the update to update the unit though.

Sorry to open an old(ish) thread but did you ever get this resolved?  I'm also trying but failing with my LS-WVL on latest f/w 1.71.

Have tried everything apart from factory reset.
